Airport transfer

by anabanana1991

We'll be flying into Cairns and working our way down to Sydney over 4 weeks. As we're hostelling all the way down, where is the best First place to go in Cairns from when we arrive at the Airport? And would people suggest a bus is the easiest thing to do?

Hi there,
Are you coming in at the International airport or the Domestic?
Both are very close and it's just a short walk to the domestic.
At the Domestic Airport there is a tour desk where you can get a ticket and directions to what little shuttle bus to catch into the city of Cairns.I know where it used to be..where Virgin arrivals were, but the airport is having a huge makeover and I am not sure if it is still in the old spot, you won't get lost, just ask someone. Cairns airport is only small.
The airport isn't far from the city centre, only a 15 minute drive.I wouldn't try to walk it!:)
Or there is a taxi rank at the Domestic airport, easy to find and the fare into the city would be around $20.
A lot of the Backpacker places also have a pick up service.
There are lots of Backpacker places in Cairns city area. I would suggest that you book into one for the first night and then go from there....if you are coming in the off season you shouldn't have any trouble booking..

One that is close to the city area is Gecko's and it is a lovely old building, smaller than the others in the city. It's right behind the big shopping centre, Cairns Central and is within walking distance to everything in the city.
Here is a website where you can check it out.

Have a great time in Paradise:)

Lots of good hostels in Cairns, with many you get a free meal at the will find your way there sooner or later anyway!

I did the Oz Experience bus (but the other way up the coast) and it was great, it is quite expensive but you meet lots of people, have lots of fun and do some things you wouldn't normally do otherwise. Drivers are great and really get people interacting.

Cheaper is the greyhound bus but everyone puts their i pod on or sleep. People arent as friendly but thats my opinion.

Have a great time...

Travel Tips for Cairns

The Cairns mudflats

by tropicrd

The mudflats along the Cairns esplanade is a haven for many species of birdlife, mud crabs and other creatures. It has a wonderful boardwalk with viewing stations and is a great place to have a picnic/bbq--especially at dusk.
The childrens playground called "muddies" is a great place for families with water features to cool off--most children like to watch the mudcrabs when the tide is out.The "Nard" is also used for exercise--joggers,bike riders etc and have exercise stations placed along the 2 1/2 klms stretch.
It is such a tropical paradise. The tropical climate and surrounding mountains and the laid back atmosphere.

Here is a great place to visit while in Cairns OR you can stay here at the Caravan park or check out other accommodation around this great little lake.

It is very family friendly and has swimming, boating and also paddle boats for the fit:)

There is a Kiosk here as well as a restaurant.

You can have a picnic on the banks of the Lake or you can have a BBQ.

You can continue onwards along the road from here and visit the Barron River Hydro scheme.
You can do a tour of this Hydro.

This river is where some of the rafting companies do one of their rafting days out.

I highly reccommend a visit here. It is another place the locals go when it's hot and you can;t swim at the beaches.

Day Trip to Kuranda from Cairns

by prymsu

One of the not to be missed things today includes a scenic trip to the village of Kuranda from Cairns. We took the sky rail to get there, and the scenic train ride down the mountain to return. Cost was very reasonable. Once in Kuranda, there are many little shops and museums to check out at your leisure. The views getting there are awesome!

Reef Teach

by phil_uk_net

Irishman Paddy Colwell has successfully identified a niche in the market to combine Irish eccentricism with some education about the Great Barrier Reef.
There are daily evening shows about the reef where Paddy does his best to be eccentric but he has done this so many times it looks like quite an effort now. All the same, it is quite informative and entertaining.
He also takes divers out on a Naturalist Dive Course. It is expensive for a day's diving but supposedly he is a very good guide. I booked to go but the dive was cancelled as there weren't enough people.
