My most recent visit to Cairns was to see my parents who were staying there for a few weeks on their way up north. My parents are nomads - they are retired and caravan around Australia permanently. So when I visited, it was easiest for me to stay close by - in an onsite cabin at the caravan park they were staying in. Crystal Cascades Holiday Park is a caravan park, with modern onsite cabins & villas and camping facilities. It is located about 10-15 minutes drive from the centre of Cairns in a suburb called Redlynch. The owners, Jenine and Russell are very friendly and will go out of their way to make your stay a comfortable one.
There is a pool and spa, and a large BBQ area. In recent years Russell has hooked up the wireless broadband so you can still check those all important emails during your stay. A short drive from the park you will find some shops where you can pick up groceries, and the local pizza place delivers here too. There are also a few good restaurants and pubs in the area. I stayed in a one bedroom cabin. It was clean and modern, with ensuite bathroom, TV and kitchen facilities, and was certainly a lot nicer than I was expecting.

by grets The Regency Palms Apartments look awfully unwelcoming, albeit that we are arriving nearer midnight. There is no reception as such as we have to telephone the night porter to get her to open up for us. The apartment itself makes up for any bad feeling on arrival – it’s absolutely fabulous! The kitchen is every bit as well equipped as mine at home: washing machine, tumble drier, iron, ironing board, dish washer, oven, hob, fridge, freezer, microwave and lots of pots, pans and crockery. The lounge / diner / kitchen are all open plan in an L-shape with a lovely little balcony overlooking the swimming pool. Two bedrooms and a bathroom complete the layout of the apartment – I’m sure there are flats in London half this size. It’s a great shame we are not staying longer! We feel we have to make the most of such fine facilities, so we walk to the garage shop to stock up on snacks and mixers, and have a drink before going to bed. One of the reasons we booked this particular apartment here in Cairns was to be able to wash all our clothes. Along the way, things have been rinsed out or sent to the laundry in the hotels, but now we have a chance to make sure everything is washed properly. We put a load in last night when we went to bed and again this morning before going out, and we still have more dirties to go in while we go shopping. The receptionist gives us a lift to a huge shopping mall. With such a magnificent apartment, we don’t feel we want to go out to eat lunch, so we buy a few ingredients in the supermarket for a light meal of pastrami rolls. After devouring the rolls, washing and ironing, we check out the Hotmail Account at a nearby Internet café, before catching up on much-needed sleep. The flight is late afternoon and we have paid extra to keep the apartment until departure time, so there is no need to rush. Theme: HotelAddress: 219 225 Mcleod Street, , Cairns, State of Queensla

View from our unit by SPW We stayed in a very reasonably priced, well equipped one bedroom apartment, complete with balcony and seaview. It was equipped with air conditioners and fans, full kitchen, TV and comfortable dining and lounge furniture, as well as outdoor table and chairs. Clean and quiet. Low rise building but with a lift . Property included a barbecue, pool (much colder than the sea) and sun lounges and undercover parking.
Apart from the above, a major asset was the service provided by Bruce and Judy, the host/managers. They were able to offer excellent advice, booked tours and hire cars and were always friendly. They even introduced us to the beach plovers that had colonised their car park! As we were walk in customers we were able to negotiate a deal at $130 AUD per night for a one bedroom unit.

the front of the little building! by Tourtech This is a decent smaller place close to the action downtown without paying big bucks for a big place. These apartments are 1 BR with a living room (Pull out sofa), large kitchenette, good sized bathroom with a clothes washer/dryer combo and a balcony. The rooms are clean and very well maintained, but not super fancy. All the rooms have Air Conditioning too, though your key activates it so it only works when you are in the room. It is located in a great area, within short walking distance to lots of restaurants, the casino, the harbour and also the big mall downtown. For convenience, you cannot beat the location at all though there is the inevitable revellers on the street late at night when you go home (from revelling yourself). Not that you hear any street noises from the apartments. It does not have room service, nor does it have a night desk attendant. The office is open from 7Am until 8PM and your key gets you in after that. It is basic for services, but the staff is really nice.
For facilities, there is a small pool with with a communal BBQ area that includes a sink and prep counter. there is also a great terrace on the top floor of the hotel that is always deserted and affords a great view of downtown, the harbour and the rainforest hills on the other side. You cannot beat the location at all. There is secure parking in the hotel, but you do not need a rental car since everything is within walking distance or at the most a short cab-ride away. There is a good variety store across the street for supplies to put in the fridge or if you want to cook a meal in the apartment. The washer/dryer combo is great for longer term travellers. We spent 5 weeks in Australia but less than a week in Cairns, but we did do most of our mid travel laundry while there. Also great for beach towels and swim trunks on a daily basis. We have stayed here a couple of times and also reccomended it to our friends. Over all, one of the better value VS money for our travels. We reccomend that you ask for an aparment with a pool view, it means that your balcony will not face the street if you want to spend a lot of time there. For the best views of the whole area, walk up to the roof terrace. (or sunbathe there too). Caravella 149 Backpackers by paradisedreamer Rooms are recently renovated, air-conditioned, bright, airy and spacious. I was very impressed with how nicely it was decorated, more like a hotel than a hostel. We booked all our dive trips through the hostel as well as bus trips. The staff were very helpful.
This hostel has clean but basic accommodation with several small kitchens and a big outdoor area with a swimming pool, pool table and plenty of picnic tables. All the rooms have fridges and air-conditioning and some have nice sea views.
