Crystal Cascades Holiday Park: Crystal Cascades Holiday Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My most recent visit to Cairns was to see my parents who were staying there for a few weeks on their way up north. My parents are nomads - they are retired and caravan around Australia permanently. So when I visited, it was easiest for me to stay close by - in an onsite cabin at the caravan park they were staying in. Crystal Cascades Holiday Park is a caravan park, with modern onsite cabins & villas and camping facilities. It is located about 10-15 minutes drive from the centre of Cairns in a suburb called Redlynch. The owners, Jenine and Russell are very friendly and will go out of their way to make your stay a comfortable one.

There is a pool and spa, and a large BBQ area. In recent years Russell has hooked up the wireless broadband so you can still check those all important emails during your stay. A short drive from the park you will find some shops where you can pick up groceries, and the local pizza place delivers here too. There are also a few good restaurants and pubs in the area. I stayed in a one bedroom cabin. It was clean and modern, with ensuite bathroom, TV and kitchen facilities, and was certainly a lot nicer than I was expecting.

Royal Harbour Breakfree Resort: Directly on the Esplanade, but not expensive
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a fully equipped apartment with laundry, kitchen, and jacuzzi facilities. Its quite reasonably priced and delivers a bit of luxury you find rather surprising for what you pay. The view is exceptional, and security very tight. I would definitely recommend this to just about anyone.

An en suite hot tub which is surprisingly large.

Marlin Waters Apartments: Good Value Sea Views
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed in a very reasonably priced, well equipped one bedroom apartment, complete with balcony and seaview. It was equipped with air conditioners and fans, full kitchen, TV and comfortable dining and lounge furniture, as well as outdoor table and chairs. Clean and quiet. Low rise building but with a lift . Property included a barbecue, pool (much colder than the sea) and sun lounges and undercover parking.

Apart from the above, a major asset was the service provided by Bruce and Judy, the host/managers. They were able to offer excellent advice, booked tours and hire cars and were always friendly. They even introduced us to the beach plovers that had colonised their car park! As we were walk in customers we were able to negotiate a deal at $130 AUD per night for a one bedroom unit.

Regency Palms Holiday Apartments: Good after the initial welocme
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Regency Palms Apartments look awfully unwelcoming, albeit that we are arriving nearer midnight. There is no reception as such as we have to telephone the night porter to get her to open up for us. The apartment itself makes up for any bad feeling on arrival – it’s absolutely fabulous! The kitchen is every bit as well equipped as mine at home: washing machine, tumble drier, iron, ironing board, dish washer, oven, hob, fridge, freezer, microwave and lots of pots, pans and crockery. The lounge / diner / kitchen are all open plan in an L-shape with a lovely little balcony overlooking the swimming pool. Two bedrooms and a bathroom complete the layout of the apartment – I’m sure there are flats in London half this size. It’s a great shame we are not staying longer! We feel we have to make the most of such fine facilities, so we walk to the garage shop to stock up on snacks and mixers, and have a drink before going to bed. One of the reasons we booked this particular apartment here in Cairns was to be able to wash all our clothes. Along the way, things have been rinsed out or sent to the laundry in the hotels, but now we have a chance to make sure everything is washed properly. We put a load in last night when we went to bed and again this morning before going out, and we still have more dirties to go in while we go shopping. The receptionist gives us a lift to a huge shopping mall. With such a magnificent apartment, we don’t feel we want to go out to eat lunch, so we buy a few ingredients in the supermarket for a light meal of pastrami rolls. After devouring the rolls, washing and ironing, we check out the Hotmail Account at a nearby Internet café, before catching up on much-needed sleep. The flight is late afternoon and we have paid extra to keep the apartment until departure time, so there is no need to rush.

Oasis Resort Cairns: Nice Stay   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:

  • I was not in the hotel much but it was very comfortable. The view from the balcony was nice and the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend staying at Oasis.

The pool is very nice. You walk over a man made "sandy beach" to get into the pool.

Oasis Resort Cairns: Should be given a 5 star rating   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:

  • This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The first thing you notice when you arrive is that someone rushes out of the hotel to help you with your luggage. They then escort you to the Check in desk where the staff are equally well mannered and efficient. Our room was ready when we arrived and they had even turned the aircon on 10 minutes before so that the room was nice and cool. The room was immaculately clean as was the bathroom, both of which were a good size. We stayed on the ground floor so we had a shaded courtyard. I recommend that you ask for a ground floor room as the sun shines directly onto the balconies and it looked like they would get very hot. The facilities include a restaurant, fitness centre and pool with pool bar!!! The pool has a man made beach and the water temperature always warm. The buffet breakfast is great as is the restaurant. The tour desk is very helpful and the concierge gave us directions everywhere. The hotel is very close to everything.

I would say that the pool is this hotels unique quality. The man made beach is great for the kids and the pool bar is great for the adults.

  • Cairns Beach House accom. - Cairns
    Cairns Beach House accom.

This is would have to be the best Hostel I've stayed in during my week in Queensland. This is mainly due to the extra features you get: we got a double bed in our own room for only $20 ea per night and right outside are 4 dorm beds & ensuite right by, and it's still quite private. Each night you get a free meal (2-4 choices, which would be about $10 if you had to buy it in town). Free courtesy bus runs about 7 times a day into the centre of town and back. Free tour booking desk at reception, good stock of brochures so you can plan your stay easily.

The outdoor dining and bar area (covered by shade sails as most things are in Qld) in the courtyard by the pool is very nice and has big screen tv and music playing, pool tables, good atmosphere. Hostel self catering kitchen has plenty of stoves and equipment in good cond. Sheets in the rooms are linen, nice and white and clean (unlike other hostels where we paid more and had very tatty cotton threadbare sheets, almost falling apart) Not too noisy at night either, unless you were in one of the upper units above the bar area (most accom is more secluded at rear of building behind office)

  • Rooms are recently renovated, air-conditioned, bright, airy and spacious. I was very impressed with how nicely it was decorated, more like a hotel than a hostel. We booked all our dive trips through the hostel as well as bus trips. The staff were very helpful.

This hostel has clean but basic accommodation with several small kitchens and a big outdoor area with a swimming pool, pool table and plenty of picnic tables. All the rooms have fridges and air-conditioning and some have nice sea views. We paid AUD50 for a double room

Calypso Inn: Best hostel I stayed in in Cairns
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hostel consists of 2 (or 3?) old Queensland houses, really nice buildings. There was a great pool that we spent quite some time in. When I was there in 1997 we stayed furthest away from the bar area to avoid to much noise (there was nothing). Like all the hostels in Cairns they gave out free meal tickets for the Woolshed in centre of Cairns.

It's a small way from the city centre but there's a free courtesy bus at different times during the day

Cairns Queenslander: An okay place in Cairns
  • Tip Rating:
  • The rooms are quite large and there is a kitchen and lounge area. More like a small flat than a hotel room. The location is a little out of town and takes 25 minutes to walk into the centre. This wouldn't have been so bad if the temperature had been so oppressively hot when I was there.
