    This hostel consists of 2 (or 3?) old Queensland houses, really nice buildings. There was a great pool that we spent quite some time in.
    When I was there in 1997 we stayed furthest away from the bar area to avoid to much noise (there was nothing).
    Like all the hostels in Cairns they gave out free meal tickets for the Woolshed in centre of Cairns.

    It's a small way from the city centre but there's a free courtesy bus at different times during the day

  • The rooms are quite large and there is a kitchen and lounge area. More like a small flat than a hotel room.
    The location is a little out of town and takes 25 minutes to walk into the centre. This wouldn't have been so bad if the temperature had been so oppressively hot when I was there.

    We were doing things on the cheap so started out in a rented caravan at a caravan site. However, after one night of tripping over each other, we moved into a motel! That was much better. No complaints about accommodations - there is something for every taste. Photo of one of the tourist sites - the railway station at Kuranda in the hills overlooking Cairns.

    Cairns Central YHA is a decent place to stay. Rooms are not too big, but there is enough space to store your luggage and they all have aircon. All the rooms are grouped around the open-air communal area with a small pool. The negative thing about it is, that it might get pretty loud during the night. Kitchen and bathrooms are clean and well maintained. There's a travel desk at the reception where you can arrange all kinds of tours.

    I stayed in Carins City Backpackers for 3 days. Quiet and clean, each room has funny name: 2 kangoroos, 1 butterfly, 3 frogs......
    I recommended this backpackers' to my friends I met in other cities when I heard they whould go to Carins.

    Colorful walls in dorms. Wood facilities in dinning-room. Little pool, there are hammocks in the yard, but I had no chance to lay in, cause there always someone in it.
    Servicemen are good guys.
    Free dinner every night!

    The best hotel in Cairns is undoubtedly the Cairns International.
    Great location, beautiful Colonial style, excellent rooms and service.

    Wonderful colonial style Lobby, great pool area on first floor, excellent Lobby Bar with live jazz in evenings, top-class restaurants.

  • the serpant is at the end of Lake street out of town. It has only been open a couple of months so is sparkly new with electronic keys. It will take about 15-20 minsto walk into town, but there is a free shuttle bus.

    It has the usual facilities such as laudry, swimming pool kitchen etc

    Also has a grumpy woman as a receptionist.

    Dorms range from $19-$21 per person depending on dorm size. Double and twin rooms are $50 per room

    I stayed here for nearly a month. I had just arrived in Australia and chose the first place i saw. It is cheap and it is budget but with nice staff and guests and a good bar to warm up for a night out its a pleasant stay.

    Rooms are far from luxury but they do the job. In Cairns your not going to be spending much time in the room so why spend the extra money.

    I did in during my stay think about moving somewhere else but when i started thinking if it i thought worth the bother.

    Not really unique but you can do your laundry, theres a pool and a bar. 2 blocks from the from the shopping centre and 3 blocks from the centre, marina and lagoon.

    Guest Kitchen and back garden. Tour desk had loads of trips to do and they have a lot of guests working in the hostel. Theres also an outside bar and barbeque area. You also get tea and toast in the morning.

    This place was a great place to stay for us as all the comforts of home were provided. The kitchen was fully equipped, the laundry had all the necessaries, bedrooms comfortable, and there was plenty of space for us to all spread out. The pools were fabulous...the kids loved playing in the sand. It was exceptionally quiet and peaceful, close to everything, and had tour buses leaving for 'everywhere' just at the 'back' door. They also had a shuttle bus which picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. We stayed on one of their package deals, which included trips to Kuranda and Green Island, and worked out to be very economical for us. We had a great time here and would not hesitate to go back.
