Cairns in June

by eviltooth

Would it be too cold to go snorkeling? What's the average temperature?

Re: Cairns in June

This site may help, it depends on what you consider too cold.

Winter: June - August

Average temperature 18-26°C. Generally sunny and dry - a haven from the colder climates to the south. Casual clothing is recommended for most of the year although a jacket will come in handy on cooler winter nights. Usually ideal conditions for enjoying what the tropical north has to offer. The water is probably warmer.

Check out this site too. http://www.cairns-australia.com/101933.php

I've been in the water in June and it's not too bad - especially if you are coming from down south or colder climes.

Many people around Perth swim all year round, and the sea and air temp will be much warmer in Cairns. It depends what you consider to be an adequate temperature.

June is a great month to come to Cairns and snorkle, weather is usually perfect.
The water will be warm:)Even though you are a *country chic* from Mount Isa, you will still feel warm over this way.:)

Do what I do, psych yourself up saying it's invigorating and refreshing and that it's going to feel great. It works, for a while.

Travel Tips for Cairns

It can get cold as well!

by ettiewyn

Most travellers come to Cairns in Australian winter due to dry season - it is not so hot then and most of the time nice 26 - 30°C. Still you should not expect the absolute perfect weather. Also in dry season it can rain from time to time, as there can be no rainforest without rain. So you should bring raingear with you also in dry season.
It can also get quiet cold in the evening and night time sometimes, so remember to bring a light jacket and also a good sleeping bag if you want to camp.

Both Seafood and Sauerbraten are out of this world

by BeverlyTyler about The Swiss Pencils Restaurant

Pencils is a small family operation. The food and wine is outstanding from the main dishes to the vegetables and the desserts. the intimate family atmosphere is very striking and the service is very attentative. This is a special place where BYO (bottle of wine) is permitted and this evening about 7pm a group of 16 came in for a birthday celebration. The others in the place were all couples and it was relaxed and very enjoyable. Sauerbraten, well aged in wine or wine vinegar with homemade red cabbage and noodles. The dessert, which I forget the name of was wonderful.

Great Barrier Reef and Cape Trib

by lesaandbill

Cairns is a great place to base yourself...if you'd like to see the Great Barrier Reef and Cape Tribulation.

When I wen there the first time...I was on a shoestring budget...and just wanted a nice place to call home in the evenings...so I booked the Lake Cairns Resort & Spa off of Orbitz...and booked a trip to the Great Barrier...and rented a car to see Cape Trib.

I was one of those crazy people who wanted to see the Great Barrier on my way to New Zealand...and stopped there for 3 days...and I"M SO GLAD I DID!!!!

I travelled with a guy friend of mine...so we got a 2 bedroom suite and only paid $126 for a huge apartment with kitchen, family, deck...the works. It was away from the town...but it was an unimpressive town...and close to the highway to check other things out.

We booked a Sailboat Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef for $101 and they picked us up from the hotel around 8:30am. Ocean Spirit Cruises (tel. 07/4031 2920). It was a smaller sailboat, so it was not overcrowded and obnoxious...and it included the snorkeling and glass submarine to see the reef. We even got a glass of champagne while we listened to an acoustic guitar player on our way back home.

And I love to scuba...but it's not necessary to scuba in order to see the amazing fish...it's out of this world!

Cape Tribulation is a MUST SEE if you're in Cairns. It reminded me of Costa Rica with the big rainforest, huge blue butterflies...and bright flowers everywhere. There is a cool spot called Dragonfly that is a definite cool spot to go and have lunch.

Swim in the nice pool!

by sue&gene

Since the beach at Cairns is a mud flat, they have built a lovely pool just on the edge of the beach. It is right in town and is possibly the nicest pool I have ever seen. It was clean and clear and was being enjoyed by people of all ages. It even had a small beach area as one entrance. We did not have time to go for a swim but it did look like it would have been worth your while.
