Just be very careful and follow local warnings and you can swim at Cape Trib. but not in the Daintree River.

just yesterday an aboriginal couple went swimming in the river and she was taken down by the croc. fotunately he had the presence of mind to blind the eyes of the croc who let her go, and she had to be airlifted to darwin hospital. be careful swimming in the rivers..

From June to at least November you can swim at the beaches north of Cairns.
This weekend they have taken the stinger nets out of a couple of the Northern beaches. They put them back if needed. The weather plays a big part in these little buggers movements.

There are signs at all beaches up here, they will tell you if the beach is open or not and they also will tell you if there are any other dangers.
ALWAYS take notice of the signs!
Don't swim in the rivers, that is asking to be a crocs dinner:)

The croc that attacked the woman during the week was in the Northern Territory, not North Queensland. Being a local, that woman really should have known better...stupid!!!

Have a great time here in the Far North of Qld...tis Paradise:)

As has already been said, take notice of the warning signs at the beaches. But also remember, if you find a nice quiet secluded beach be careful. If there's no one there it's probably because they were eaten by crocs. Only swim where there are other people around and there aren't any warning signs telling you not to.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Summer clothes are required all year round

by coolbananas

Don't bring to much luggage, you won't need much in this tropical climate... Open shoes, shorts, t-shirts. In other words: everything you'd wear on a hot summer day. Insect repellent The usual stuff. Maybe an underwater camera for a boat trip to the reef. But you can always buy that in Cairns. No beach in Cairns, but since November 2002 there's a lagoon with a man-made beach. Most hotels and hostels have a swimming pool, so bring your beach towel and swimmers! Be prepared for a hot climate, especially in the wet season (November/December till March/April). The biggest problem about the climate is the humidity in the wet season. The best time to visit Cairns is between May and October.

Good fun doesn't have to be expensive

by coolbananas about Woolshed

It's the most popular backpackers bar in Cairns. From 6 PM till 9 PM you can have a cheap meal, in combination with a voucher from one of the many hostels. After 9 PM the place changes into a bar dancing filled with backpackers.

There's a couple of special nights where you can get good drinking deals. On Tuesday night it's 5 for 9 night (five drinks for 9 AUD) and the best night is Thursday: 3 for 5 (3 drinks for 5 AUD). On both nights this is your entrance fee too. You pay the money and get a voucher for the drinks with it, that is if you come in before twelve. After twelve there's no vouchers on sale anymore. The vouchers are valid all night for all kinds of drinks, from a soda to beer to the stronger stuff (e.g. Vodka or Bacardi)

My special tip: on Thursday you can buy more than one voucher. This means you can drink cheap drinks all night if you buy a couple of vouchers at the start of the night. and drink cheap drinks for the rest of the night! Practically anything is allowed in this place, even flip flops.

Great place to meet friends

by tropicrd about Salt House

Salt House in Cairns is a great place to meet friends--it is right on the point at the end of Marlin Marina and overlooks the Coral Sea.The design for the buildings it is situated in has recently won the Nth QLD architects design award.

The tropical gardens are relaxing and cool as you enjoy a cool drink on the balinese style cushioned seats amidst the water feature ponds surrounding the walkways.

The restaurant offers local tropical food including fresh coral seafood.

They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but also offer guests a place to have coffee and read the daily newspaper. The local reef fish served on a tropical salad was fresh and light.

Atherton tablelands - Cairns hinterland

by Myndo

Atherton-Tablelands, green soft flowing hills and many waterfalls.

The Landscape feels very familiar to me, like the Jura in Switzerland.
But the climate is a lot warmer, so the forests around here are more like Rainforests.

To see:
- Barron Falls (very big, expressive especially in the wet time)
- Milaa Milla Falls (like on a tropical island-kitchy)
- Dinner Falls (the typical Waterfall)
- more: Zillie Falls, Ellinja Falls ..
- Mt Hypipamee Crater: a hole in the stone with a lake on the ground - the way to it goes through a forest, beware of the leeches here!
