Sunlover vs. Reef Magic

by swdke

I think I may be trying to decide between these to GBR operators, Sunlover and Reef Magic. I realize Sunlover has a larger boat, takes more passengers, Reef Magic has fewer passengers, but that does not concern me so much. I am mostly interested in which operation takes you to the better reef, more fish, etc. I am also taking my Mom who will not be getting in the water, so I need good viewing opportunites for her such as underwater observation area, semi-submersible, and/or glass bottom boat. Who has the best lunch? Also, I plan to go diving, so which has the best diving progam and dive sites? I am looking for as much information as possible to help me decide. From what I've already read on this forum, both seem like very good operators, therefore, how do I choose between the two? Thanks!

I would do the Quicksilver, I am a fan of this company and have been many, many times to the outer reef with them.
They are perfect for what you need. Your Mum will be able to see fish, reef and watch as others enter the water. It also has a semi submersible.
Your Mum will also be able to see them do the helmet dive and also see them set up for scuba diving.
There is plenty of space on these boats, even when full. The pontoon area is large with tables and chairs etc.
Your Mum will even be able to dip her toes into the water off the steps, plus see huge fish from there. The lunch is wonderful and plenty of food for all to eat. Prawns, chicken, salads as well as hot dishes.

They pick up from Cairns, in large coaches, they then take you up the highway to Port Douglas to catch the boat. The scenery along the way is great, make sure you sit on the righthand side of the bus:)

Travel Tips for Cairns

Australian Architecture Colonial Style

by cochinjew

Cairns is a town which has grown suddenly because of the tourism. i am told it was a sleepy little norther queensland town and some of the architecture bears evidence. i found them to be charming. wish i had more time to explore it fully

Night Markets

by grkboiler about Night Markets

The Night Markets are open daily from 5-11 PM. Here, you can find souvenirs, clothes, jewelry, and work by local artists. This is a good place to walk around and browse - you might find a good deal on something you are looking for.

Unique Tastes

by evilprebil about Dundee's

It was absolutely great! They had a variety of seafood and "local" faves. It was a very classy establishment, yet it had a very laid back vibe about it. It was a kind of sampler of kangaroo, emu, buffalo, crocodile and barramundi. I'd pass on the buffalo if I got it again, but everything else was great, esp. the barramundi.

A trip to the Reef!

by divandrea

An absolute must! Book one of the very popular and also completely touristy daytrips to the reef. But the beauty of Gret Barrier Reef is all the touristy crap worthwhile. They get you out on their plattform at the Outer Reef by boat. There you spend an entire day with different activities: snorkelling, glass bottom boat, semi sub (well you sit in some kind of underwater glass tank and they drive you around great barrier reef where you can enjoy the beauty of world's largest reef. And if you care: you don't even get wet), large BBQ. Everything is included in the price for the trip. If you choose other activities like scuba diving, helmet diving or a helicopter triper over great barrier reef, you have to pay extra. But you don't need to do those extra things. Your day is fully packed, at least if you like to snorkel as we did.

Go Birding

by bsfreeloader

The area north and inland from Cairns offers some exceptional birding opportunities. The World Heritage listed rainforest and the surrounding areas provide refuge for, among other species, Southern Cassowary, Australian Brush-Turkey, Orange-footed Scrubfowl, and numerous species of conspicuous and active honeyeaters and parrots. And the Cairns Esplanade is an excellent place to observe shorebirds in the hour or so before and after high tide.
