Don't know if you are a first time snorkeler. We were and had a trip with
'Great Barrier Reef Dive & Snorkel Adventures' (also called Compass Cruises).

We were very disappointed by them and would NOT recommend this company.

happy travels

We stayed at the Acacia Court several years ago. Room rates and the price for the most fabulous seafood buffet I have ever had have increased in the meantime but are still reasonable for my taste (seaview room A$ 130), check out here:

Forgot with with company we went to the Reef but it was a very nice tour. If I get hold of the details I will let you know.

I would highly recommend the Quicksilver boat trip to the reef.
I would wait to book anything for your stay as closer to the time you will be able to get some great specials. At the moment there is a bit of a quiet time in Cairns and area, tourist numbers are down and you can get some GREAT bargains here now.I think the same will be happening next year.

I have just picked up a real great deal for 5 nights in Port Douglas ( next week) at wotif.com.au

I agree with Anne about Quicksilver cruises to the outer reef. It's a full day trip, good food, they have a pontoon out there, sem-submersible boat, underwater viewing room etc. plus snorkeling and diving for those who can.

an old burmese poster at apothecarys

by cochinjew

I wonder whether they realize it, but on the windows of the apothecary shop at the private 24 hour darwin medical clinic there are old posters from Burma of the chinese patent medicines. i took photos of just one poster

T-shirts & clothing

by Kate-Me about various

This t-shirt shop is one of several in the indoor Night Markets complex, and advertised Australian made t-shirts for between $11 - $20 ea (which is very reasonable). What was surprising, because this is such good value, was when I examined the t-shirts carefully, the material is of very good quality, and fairly thick (unlike el cheapo t-shirts you find at some markets, which will only last a few washes before they're out of shape).
This is much much better value than you would ever get in Sydney or Melbourne, where the same thing retails for between $25 - $35 per t-shirt. Definitely a good place to buy Aussie t-shirts. $11 - $20 for a good t-shirt, more like $25-$35 for one with a special aboriginal designed, patterned one.

The best coffee.

by colin_bramso about Coffee Club

If, like me, you need your caffeine in the morning, the Coffee Club makes the best coffee in Cairns. At least, they did when we were last there - I tried them all.
Indoor or outdoor seating, right in the heart of the busy strip The Esplanade. They make the espresso - the heart of all good coffee - properly. And a lot of places, sadly, don't do that

Join an eco-tour

Was with Northern Exposure for a day trip to the highland and waterfalls. Our guide/drive was Brad, a nice and knowledgable guide who really love the nature.

The tour inclusive of morning tea in the national park, visiting rain forest, waterfalls, spanish castle, a nice lunch in the highland, and dont forget the wonderful desserts, I have extra sharing :D A visit to the volcano lake and afternoon tea with scone! Yummy~~~

Snorkelling on Great Barrier Reef

by Cindyep

As I am 20 weeks pregnant I wanted to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef with a company that was able to offer more individual attention. I didn't like the thought of being one of 100's on a large boat.

We definitely found what we were looking for with Ocean Spirit. The number of people on the boat was comfortable and there was a large number of friendly staff to assist. We hadn't even taken our last bite before a staff member was there to collect the plates.

Ocean Spirit offer everything you need for the ultimate snorkelling experience. We watched a video on reef life so we would be able to recognise fish when were snorkelling, they have a semi submergeable for seeing underwater while staying dry and an excellent freshly prepared buffet lunch. I wear glasses and Ocean Spirit were able to lend me optical goggles to use while snorkelling for a $20 deposit (refunded when you return the glasses).

The champagne and live music on the sail home enhanced the day.
