White Water Rafting

by Susumarie

We will be in Cairns in a week or so, and I am wondering how the weather has been doing for rafting -- I had heard this could be a bad time of year, as the river is too high. Can anybody give me an update?
Thank you,
Elizabeth

I think your problem will be finding a rafting tour that isn't already booked out. Try googling white water rafting in Cairns and contact the companies.

Try this link:

We rented an underwater camara downtown Cairns for a 24 hour time period.

They give you a dvd of the photos of your trip afterwards.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Corals are ...

by Sharrie

Corals are found in most of the world's seas, even in polar waters. However, only those which have symbiotic zooxanthellae (single-celled plants which live in the cells of the polyp tissues) & live in shallow, warm, tropical waters grow fast enough to form reefs.

Coral reefs are hence only found in waters where the min temperature does not drop below about 18°C & grow fastest where the temperature is around 26°C. Light is required for the algae's photosynthesis. Hence, corals grow best in clear, shallow continental shelf waters (less than 50 m deep) & away from river influences.

Savannah Way

by aussirose

We left Cairns and headed for Darwin across what is called the Savannah Way. If you are planning to do the same trip, then why not follow my story. Our first overnight stop was the famous Undara Lava Tubes and sleeping in a railway carriage. Check out the sight below for all the info and the follow my story by clicking the link below.

Of course you can catch the train from Cairns to Undara and this could be a nice little off the beaten path trip. We enjoyed it at Undara and sleeping in the railway carriage :o) www.undara.com.au will give you all the info you need.

Excellent food & great atmosphere

by pugwashman about Soul n' Pepper Bistro - Port Douglas

This Restaurant/Bar sits right on the waterfront at Port Douglas, just past the St Marys by the Sea Church. If you're not hungry it's a great place to just sit and chill out with a drink, but if you're hungry you won't be disappointed. They do a variety of food, and everything we had and saw others having was delicious. The service was wacky but friendly and efficient and I would recommend this to anyone visiting Port Douglas. I had Prawn Caesar Salad which was fantastic, with plenty of succulent prawns on show and a nice fried egg on top.

Great Barrier Reef

by saw50st8

Go out and see the great barrier reef! The reef, one of the natural wonders of the world, is easily accessible by coach to Port Douglas (about 1.5 hours away from Cairns). Most companies have their own shuttle services.

We chose to snorkel with quicksilver. I was hesitant after reading some reviews about going with very large companies, but I decided that the large boat was probably better because I get sea sick. We had a great experience with them!

First, they pick you up from aroudn Cairns (or wherever you are) and shuttle everyone to the pier at Port Douglas. If you did not prepay, you will have to go inside and get your boarding passes before getting on the boat. The boat was a large and spacious boat with plenty of room for everyone! There were outdoor and indoor areas. Inside you could order drinks/snacks.

We went out to the far section of the reef, right off the continental shelf. It took about 1.5 hours to get there by boat. Once there, they served lunch almost right away. There was plenty of snorkel gear (enough for everyone). When we started snorkelling, they had some fish feeding near the platform -- it was really interesting to see some of the fish fight and devour the food!

The reef itself was really shallow where we were - in fact parts of it were above water! This was great because all the coral was shallow and it was really easy to see the coral and the fish and the different colors. Just remember not to touch or harm the coral!

In addition to snorkelling, we were able to take a submarine like vessel (free) to get a tour of the coral up close. This was fantastic because it was guided by a marine biologist and is perfect if there are any non swimmers in the group. They also have helicopter rides, scuba diving and sea walking if you want.

All the companies charge about the same. I highly recommend quicksilver.

Paronella Park

by tim07

The park covers 13 acres of rainforest beside Mena Creek Falls. It was the creation of Jose Paronella & officially opened in 1935.

I visited the park on an organised day trip from Cairns It was a delight to walk through the park with its thousands of plants & trees, trying to spot glimpses of the many varieties of wildlife that are found there.

The park also contains many concrete structures inspired by Moorish architecture, these have been damaged by the elements & are covered in vegetation. This just adds to the feeling that you are discovering a magical lost world.
