Internet access

by ansb

Will be spending a week in Cairns soon, and I would like some advice as to whether to take my laptop, or access the internet at internet cafes. Appreciate any feedback.

Re: Internet access

by Mariams30

Hi, you can go for both options, many places offer wireless access and all the hostels offer internet access, some for as little as 3 dollars unlimited access. I'm in the process of compiling a page with all the info about the internet cafes in Tropical North Queensland(I update it as I get more info), maybe it can help you, but you can find internet access in many oher places. The pages is http://www.cairnsunlimited.com/internetcafes.htm

cheers,
Maria

Thanks for that great information, Maria, and good luck with your pages.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Daintree

by aussirose

My Off the Beaten Path tips are all from the road trips I took so I cannot recommend a tour operator. However, if you save them to your trip planner and ask Global Gossip about them, I am sure that they will be able to recommend the right day trip for you.

Firstly, one cannot bypass Cairns without doing a day trip to the Daintree and a river cruise. Check out my travelogue below for the low down :o)

A nice Irish pub

by coolbananas about PJ O'Briens

PJ O'Briens is a typical Irish pub. I've been told that more than 80% of the interior comes from Ireland. They serve lots of Irish beer and of course the Ozzie beers! The bar staff is very well trained and you never have to wait for a long time.

Twice a week there's a live band (when I was there in June 2002 it was on Tuesdays and Thursdays) playing good music. When there's a special event (like the World Cup) they have a big screen showing the event.

During happy hour they have good deals on jugs of beer (AU$6 for 1,1 litre) and other drinks. They also serve food till 9 pm. Casual, especially during the day. At night time they're a little more strict, but nothing to worry about. Because of the tropical climate in Cairns there's no strict rules on clothes...

Have lunch at a waterfall

by ettiewyn about Waterfall Café at Mungalli Falls

The Waterfall Café is located right at the top of beautiful Mungalli Falls (see my Things To Do Tip) at the edge of beautiful rainforest. You can sit in a wooden pavillion while having sandwiches, lunches, breakfast and pavlova. I had a pavlova that was simply delicious.

Snorkel the reef

by didiba

There is nothing better than a boat trip to the Great Barrier reef. What a great mix of colourfull fish and corals.Enjoy a great lunch buffet onboard and prepare yourself for another afternoon snorkel. This is great fun.

Atherton Tablelands

by Custodyspice

There are countless shops in Cairns where you can book up trips into the Rainforest. I cant remember how much I paid. Some Aussie nutcase called Bill took us up to the Atherton Tablelands. The first lake we stopped at he told us crocs sometimes swam in it. He then proceeded to strip off, stark bollock naked, dived in, swam like a fish to the other side and yelled "Come on in then". Everyone reluctantly peeled off to their swimsuits and gingerly stepped in. I dont think anyone was bothered so much about the crocs. I think everyone was more shocked at the sight of his todger.

It might be wise to put on some insect repellant because in the deeper parts the flies draw blood. We had a BBQ at Millaa Millaa Falls which was pretty.
