Large, well-situated and modern accomodation
Gilligan's is massive. It's a very well-laid out complex, though, and quite modern for a "hotel" (really a hostel, if judging by the amount of people in each room). Large plate-glass windows showcase the city, and the location is great. The bar on-site attracts a lot of people and there are guests from all over. The staff is helpful. Overall it's better than most large hostels, though still a little bit impersonal.

Gilligan's
If you were looking for a place to stay that is inexpensive and affordable, you will probably be looking for a very inexpensive hostel accommodation. Gilligan's is not the most inexpensive option, but definitely offers a full service hotel style accommodation at the price of an expensive youth hostel.
I decided to stay in the 6-person share accommodation, which afforded me a bunk bed, a place to store and lock up my gear, and also a shower and bathroom facility in the room.
The accommodation was clean, but definitely smelled like the last tourist. I think the backpacker lifestyle accommodates that cleaniless is not first on the personal list.
The facility had plenty of washing machines, and a really nice entertainment facility to watch tv or relax in. There were personal cooking spaces as well as a nice place to grab a burger and fries downstairs.

New Kid On The Block
Offering everything from 6share dorms to hotel style doubles. The new kid on the block is a backpacker resort with bar and nightclub on the groundfloor, a huge tour booking office on site and the mandatory swimming pool with bar. Located in the heart of Cairns within walking distance of eateries, nightlife and the lagoon it is housed above the local produce and craft market "Rustys" on Grafton St. Although new it is already extremely popular and bookings need to be made in advance to avoid disappointment.
Unique Quality: A hostel with all the trimmings associated with hotels.
