Diving charters around the holidays

by mesoblonda

Hi to all my Aussie friends which I've yet to meet.

Are diving charters more expensive around Christmas or would be it better to wait until January to dive?

Any suggestions of quality dive companies?

Thanks much.

I will have to check, but I don't think the charter prices change much at all, all year about the same.
BUT, at this time of year you are going to be at the hands of the weather Gods.
From end of October it's what they call the start of the wet season.
This lasts until around end of March/April...
It doesn't mean it will rain everyday...or cyclons will appear monthly, it just means it can/could do this.
If this is the only time you can get here, I would do Christmas time, not January.

I would love to meet up with you when you are here, but I am flying back to Victoria on the 23rd December for three weeks.
Let me know when you are coming and we could meet up for a drink or two....maybe three:)

We just came back from a dive trip from Cairns. We went on the Reef Encounter which was a fantastic boat. Their website is There are several dives during the day as well as a dive each night. The boat travels between three different reefs and the diving was fantastic. The boat was very comfortable and the dive masters were brilliant. They have a bar and a spa onboard and the cabins were very comfortable. Their rates don't change over Christmas. I hope that this helps.

Mission Beach just south of Cairns is a better spot to go out to the reef from and it is a much much more beautifull place to stay. Is the cloest area to the outer reef and seems slightly cheaper than in Cairns, where the boats tend to get slightly crowded.
The other alterantive to cairns is Port Douglas just a wee bit north, but the boats there also get crowded like Cairns.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Scuba or snorkel your choice

by tropical_ellie

Scuba Diving is when you go to a whole different world...a world that only a few privilege get to see. Scuba Diving is when you get to put on a sexy tight rubber fitting suit that keeps you cool yet warm and protects you. Also you have a huge tank on your back that allows you to breath by connecting a mouthpiece to your mouth of course.

Scuba Diving is quite special because you get to see things only a few privilege get to see. Diving along The Great Barrier Reef is amazing. Their's a whole new world under their that you forgot about everything that goes on above the water and you just admire the coral and the fish and the way they just seem so happy.

This is a truly unique experience for anyone who hasn't dive and for anyone who has dive over and over again. You could bring your own scuba gear but i'm sure you really don't want to lug it around and I don't think airplanes let you take oxygen tanks on board anymore, so on most of the cruises around Cairns you can hire gear and they provide everything that you need to beginners to experienced divers.

Also you can buy your own gear among many of the shops around Cairns but I do recommend that hire one instead of buying one because its easier.

Casino: good fun in a luxurious setting

by coolbananas about Reef Casino

A nice night out, with a possibility of winning some money! There's all kinds of games, like roulette, blackjack, pokies, etc.

As usual the casino looks very nice: luxurious interior. No matter what your budget is, you can always play some games and try your luck. The roulette table has a minimum bet of AU$2 which makes it available for every traveller... Not very strict. No flip flops, that's about it.

Another Greek Restaurant

by grkboiler about Fetta's

Fetta's is a Greek restaurant with good seafood. It has a nice authentic Greek setting and was fairly quiet when I went. I had kalamari with a shot of ouzo. The kalamari was cooked perfectly, and the ouzo went down smooth.

Giant Salties at Green Island

by Lildeer

Australian Crocodiles or "Salties" have been immortalized in Hollywood films. Come see what all the gore is about! Green Island is home to the most unique crocodile zoo in the world. See all ages and sizes of beasts, from harmless, almost cute, babies to full grown man-killers.

Marineland Melansia also boasts the world's largest captive crocodile. Named Cassius and nicknamed, "Sweetheart", this 3000 lb, 18 ft darling is scarier than Jaws. Be sure to swing by at 10:30 am or 1:45 pm for feeding time.

Scuba Diving Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef

by picknick

You can sign up for one of many daily cruises to the Great Barrier Reef for a day of snorkelling and scuba diving. The water is so clear and the clarity is good, you can see the bright colours of the reefs and fishes like an aquarium. If you don't have a scuba diving license, you can opt for an introductory 1/2 hr or 1 hr scuba diving session led by experienced dive master. They will literally drag everyone along in the waters, so it is pretty safe. This is my first experience with scuba diving, and I love every minute of it.
