Sailing in Cairns in April

by akhilchh

I am planning a trip to Cairns the second weekend in April and am interested in doing one of the sailing excursions that are offered locally. I see a few 2 days/1 night excursions that seem very interesting. Is this worth it because they tend to be kind of pricey?

Also, I have heard that the north coast has been ravaged by several cyclones this past week and this is the season for that sort of thing. Could someone please let me know of the weather in Cairns in April?

thanks much

Last year the weather in second week of April was damn perfect.
It was sunny days for at least 2 weeks.
BUT this year it could be totally different!!! Only the weather Gods know that:)
At the moment we are having 31C days and 23C nights. For the past few days it has been raining of a night and sometimes during the day. It coming to the end of the wet season....I do hope it is great when you are here:)

The cyclone was on the East coast down at Airlie Beach...long way down from Cairns.

I haven't done an overnight trip that you are asking about. Are you wanting to dive??
If you are just wanting to see the reef, well you can do this with a couple of companies as a day trip. I do love the Quicksilver trip, it has lots to offer. It's a full day trip.
Also you could do a day trip from Cairns up to Cape Tribulation, either by a tour thing, or self drive. I would do this before a overnight boat thing...:)Unless you are a diver:)
The drive from Cairns to the Cape is a good drive, all sealed roads...many do this, visiting Mossman Gorge along the way...this trip is great, even if it is a bit wet, the rainforest looks wonderful if it has been raining...

Hope this has helped...do ask any other questions if yopu need and we shall try to answer...:)

We didn't do any sailing trips when we visited Cairns because we did them in the Whitsundays, however I do have a suggestion. Go have a look at the specials at Global Gossip in Cairns. I found them very helpful when I visited there with a couple of mates I made at Tropic Days backpackers. Also the internet there is good too. They give you a card that you just top up with money when you need to.

....Heya Anne :o) ...thinking about our trip to Kurunda matey :o) I had the best time!! Thanks again! :o) xx

Update on weather, it has rained and rained and rained!!! this week.
I reckon it might well run out of rain in a fortnight you should be fine!!!!!!

Ann, the Kuranda train had a bit of trouble this week. There was a mud slide and it went straight into it! So the train will not be running for a few months...it will be buses not trains for the tourist.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Sun Sand & Sea

by scharneckk

The weather is beautiful most of the year ... watch out for the wet season though.

There is so much to do in Cairns and there are so many places to travel to.

The people are really friendly and helpful .. enjoy your stay in Cairns Meeting so many different people from all over the world ... On most trips I was the only Australian!

Mossman Gorge

by sue_stone

Mossman Gorge is a lovely part of the Daintree National Park. To me, its appeal lies in the crystal clear water that runs over large boulders through the river gorge. Just a short walk from the car park and you will come across a swimming hole, surrounded by rounded boulders and filled with photo opportunities….and people who aren't put off by the icy water!

The gorge area is ideal for a walk (on the marked trail of course), so you can see the interesting rainforest plants, and learn more about them by reading the signs along the way. You may also be lucky enough to spot some wildlife - be it a turtle in the river or a beautiful butterfly flitting amongst the trees.

There are toilets and a picnic area near the car park, but no camping facilities.

From Cairns, travel north for 80km along the Cook Highway to Mossman. In the centre of Mossman turn left into Johnston Road. This 5km bitumen road leads directly to the Mossman Gorge car park.

Sunbus

by vtveen

Having an accommodation about 5 km’s outside the city centre we had to use the local bus in Cairns. Sunbus is servicing all parts of the city and specially during weekdays they are running frequently. We also used the bus for visiting Cairns Zoo and you could easily do the same for the Sky rail Terminal and Tjapukai Aboriginal Park or the beaches north of Cairns.

Depending on the destination (3 zones) there are day tickets for the use of all Sunbuses. We paid AUD 6,30 for ours to the city and AUD 10,20 for Cairns Tropical Zoo.

Buses leave to all suburbs from the Transit Centre, in the midlle of the city centre of Cairns.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

by sue_stone

What an experience! The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is an amazing cable car ride which takes you for a 7.5km trip across the top of the rainforest, just north of Cairns.

A one-way trip takes about 1.5 hours and departs from either Caravonica or Kuranda, depending on your direction of travel. If you are going to take just the one-way option (you can do a return trip as well) then I would recommend starting in Kuranda so you get the great views as you come down the hill into Cairns. There are two station stops along the way if you want to get off and go for a wander in the rainforest.

We found this to be a fabulous experience and loved the feeling that we were floating about the trees. A friend of mine who is scared of heights also thought it was an amazing experience, but did confess to being terrified the whole time!

Highly recommended.

The Esplanade.

by colin_bramso

This should be your first stop in Cairns. It's the main street, called The Esplanade. Between the city and the water, it's a pleasant place to stroll, to sit, to picnic, to eat, to shop.
Many of the tour companies are based here, there's backpacker accommodation (hotels are just off The Esplanade), cafes, take-away food, restaurants, souvenir shops...
