Again Lizard Island and some...
Again Lizard Island and some of the remote island in the Great Barrier Reef. Karunda is great too although getting there is very touristy the town itself is very beautiful and nice walking.

So much to do. If you are in Queensland you have to dive the Great Barrier Reef. A flight to Lizard Island is worth it. Also do the Kurunda train trip and stay a while in Kurunda. Go to the Butterfly Sancutary too!
Beautiful seascapes and scenery.
Visit Lizard Island in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. It is so isolated and beautiful. Fun for divers or just to kick back and enjoy the sunshine and wonderfully unpopulated beach. This time of year is nice although it can be rainy. Not cold at all though so if you don't mind a little bit of clouds and rain it is a great part of the country to visit The whole 18 days went too fast. This is a great country. People here are so wonderful and love to talk to Americans. Their accents are not like those on the Telly although they do have different phase meanings than we do and those can sometimes make you blush. Sydney is beautiful for a big city but I miss the greenery of Queensland.
Lizard Island is a National Park covering over thousand hectares, with over twenty sandy beaches and the famous Blue Lagoon, home to giant clams and coral gardens. The highest peak is Cook's Look at 359 meters.
Meet the occasional Monitor Lizard (after which the island is named), the prolific bird life, the countless and dazzling array of tropical fish, the 70-year-old giant clams and the colorful marine life of Lizard Island's spectacular fringing coral reefs only a leisurely snorkel from the beach.
A little further away, set your sights on the sheer magnificence of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The nearby Cod Hole is a Mecca for scuba divers with its amazing moray eels and massive potato cod that swim right up to you with curiosity and fascination. This is just one of the many unforgettable dive sites that are all close by. With experienced diving instructors who specialize in providing a breathtaking journey into the remarkable world of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is a rare underwater adventure. Whether it is a relaxing dive in a coral garden, an exhilarating drift dive along a channel drop off or a thrilling night dive...
If you would rather stay above water, Lizard Island is every fisherman's dream, where the fishing remains fast and furious all year round. Barracuda, spangled emperor, yellowfin, dogtooth tuna, sailfish, Spanish mackerel and giant trevally—these are just some of the excellent sports fishing to be had when you fish the rich tropical waters off Lizard Island. Pre-booking your fishing excursions is highly recommended.
Barrier Reef - Code Hole - Pixies Pinnacle - Steves Bommie etc etc.
Dive trip with Mike Ball adventures was teriffic great food company and dive sites.
Flight from Cairns up to Lizard Island was great it takes about 50 mins.
The trip back from the last dive site to Cairns was in the dive boat. The boat was raced back over night to give the crew some time off before re-loading. The passengers were battered to heck being tossed around their cabins. Bottles were smashing, doors slamming, waves were crashing. I was holding onto the side of my bunk for dear life for at least 6 hours. I wouldn't have transported animals in those conditions! Mike Ball provides equipment - your own dive gear is always best.

My folks are thinking about booking 4 days at upscale Lizard Island. Since it is so expensive, I want to make sure this is a resort that they will be comfortable in. The travel agent is about 28, but my folks are 62 & 60, but young at heart and healthy. Does anyone have any information on this subject?
Hi,
I haven't been to Lizard Island, I would go though if I were your parents.
I have heard it's amazing and a wonderful holiday.
Hope they have a great time.
Cheers
Anne
What time of the year are they planning this holiday?
I ask this because from now to about June it is the rainy season up in the Far North Qld.
If they are going during this time I would suggest that maybe they should look a bit further down the coast closer to Whitsunday area. An example of an Island/resort holiday there is Hamilton Island. There a a few other Islands in this area as well.
Cheers
Anne
hello guys,
a friend of mine wants to know if there are any flights between these 2 islands.
can u help?
thanks in advance
I doubt it VERY much as they are miles apart and
small Islands don't have an airport, Hayman Island is down at the Whitsundays and Lizard Island is way up near Cook Town.
You have to get from Hayman to the nearest airport that flights to Cairns leaves from. You would fly into Cairns and then make your way to Lizard Island.
Tell your friend to check out Qantas.com.au
or Virginblue.com.au
thanks so much :)
My husband & I are visiting australia in 2 weeks --- 3 days in Sydney, 3 days in cairns and 2 days on lizard Island. We'd like to get some advice as to where to stay when arriving in cairns. Our plan is to spend a day in the rainforest (dain or kuranda?) and 1 day on GBR tour, and open to suggestion on our 3rd day. Since we are heading out to Lizard island for 2 days, should we stay in cairns? palm cove? or port douglas?
Welcome to VT.
Kuranda is a nice little village in the hills above Cairns, although very green it isn't really a rainforest.
For your 3rd day I could recommend visiting Atherton Tableland by a guided tour or a rental car.
I would opt staying in Cairns (rather close to the airport) and it is a nice town for a couple of days.

Happy travels

I would stay in Cairns. Do a day trip up the coast to Port Douglas and the Daintree. Do the GBR day trip on the second day, and on the next day go up to Kuranda (not far) and generally enjoy Cairns area including the crocodile farm. If you felt up to it you could go on from Kuranda and spend the whole day travelling to some of the nice spots on the tableland. Best wishes.
For a 3 day visit I would stay in Cairns and do the trips from here.
I recommend the Quicksilver reef trip, outer reef.
Then hire a car to do the trip from Cairns to Cape Trib. This can be done in comfort in a day.
Leave Cairns early, around 6.30am, then head to Port Douglas ( about an hour) have a look around there, then off to Mossman Gorge, do the walk here( earlier the better as you will miss the bus tours arriving) you could do Port Douglas when you are coming home to Cairns. From Mossman head over the river and onward to Cape Trib.
Third day you could head to the Atherton tablelands OR do a trip on the skyrail to Kuranda, you can't do the train trip at the moment as it has been closed due to a rock fall on the track.
You could also just spend the day around Cairns. Here you can go to the Esplanade and have a walk, head out to the Botanical Gardens, really lovely, from the gardens you can walk to the Tanks area, great.
You could also do the the lakes area in Greenslopes Rd. This is a nice area where you can walk....there are a couple of crocs there at the moment, they could still be there when you come, but they are talking about getting them out of this area...You can get to both these areas by bus.
Cairns has a good art Gallery, plus other stuff:)
You could also catch a bus from the city centre and go out to Palm Cove for a look, it is a lovely little place to have lunch or afternoon coffee..a few nice clothes shops there as well.
You could also hire a car for the day to do these things....lots of car hire places here...
Have a great time here.
