Moving to Cairns in a month

by Kevo3

Good day everybody!
I will be moving to Cairns from the Caribbean in a little under a month. When I first get there I think I want to stay in hostels to get my bearings straight and get acquainted with the city. Any suggestions for a cheap/ popular hostel within the city limits? Also, I work in the tourism/ hospitality industry and have my whole life. I have a lot of experience in every aspect of the restaurant industry and have worked for multiple departments in hotels. I am currently working at a Westin (starwood property) in St John, VI and was curious if there are other starwood properties such as sheratons, W's, and westins in the cairns/ port douglas area. What are some of the higher end restaurants or in general better restaurants to work for in that area as well? Are there travel agencies that design trips or day long excursions for tourists as well? and lastly, what are the wages in Queensland? I have heard its 20$/hr but wasn't sure if that is spot on.
thanks for any and all the help you can provide.

Good luck on your move to Cairns.....

Have a loook at this website regarding accommodation:

http://www.cairns.com.au/visitor-information/backpackers/

The hostels usually have job adverts up on a board, and if you get lucky you could possibly get a job on one of the island resorts.

Yes- there are Sheratons & Westins in Cairns - and Port Douglas-

Plenty of upmarket restuarants- you would have to check them out yourself once you arrive

The wage sounds about correct....

But most importantly- you MUST have a working visa/permit on arrival- without this you will be refused entry. YOu also need to produce proof that you can support yourself on arrival.

There are very many agencies that arrange day trips and longer trips all around Australia, so yes- around Cairns they are there.

Thank you Lynne for your help! I am just curious as to exactly what you mean by I will need to produce proof that I am able to support myself when I get there. Do you mean show them I have money to support myself or that when I get there I dont just party and make a bad name for myself in the town? Whether either of those are the cases, I will be able to surpass both and make a good name for myself. I am an intelligent, motivated and hard working adult with a good financial background.
Thanks again for the help,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

I am not sure if you are actually immigrating to Australia or coming on a long term visa.........
Immigration always want to see proof of financial security in the latter, because very many people arrive here, have no funds, no working permit etc, and they come in the hope of finding work, which is not assured and not legal unless they have a permit. They end up falling through the cracks financially, and often end up on the street.I have actually SEEN people being hauled out at immigration, and returned to their country of origin before stepping out of the airport. Immigration is incredibly strict.. They will want to see a bank statement etc. Why don't you contact the department?
It has nothing at all to do with what you actually spend your money on, or how much you like to party .......Australia loves to party, and most do.
I hope that all goes well for you, and you will certainly love living in Australia- providing you go about entering the country the correct way.
Good luck

Thanks again. Yes I applied for a year long holiday work visa so I am planning on staying for at least a year. I do have a great financial background and so you suggest that i bring a bank statement with me to prove it? sounds good. thanks for the advice.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Currency

by Marpessa

Australian currency is in dollars ($AUD). There are 100 cents to a dollar. We have 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces (coins), which are silver, 1 and 2 dollar coins, which are gold.

We also have 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar notes. Each note is a distinctively different colour and they each have a 'clear window' in the notes. "Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of bank notes based on plastic (polymer). These notes provide much greater security against counterfeiting. They also last four times as long as conventional paper (fibrous) notes." (taken from: www.dfat.gov.au/facts/currency.html)

For more information - like who are the people on the notes see the website above.

Cape Tribulation

by kooka3

Go up to Cape Trib and stay at the Youth Hostel there: http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/details.cfm?hostelid=44

It is the coolest place!! You stay in large tent-type things tucked into the rain forest!

There are paths cutting through the trees to other tents, the bathrooms, and the common room. I loved sitting in the common room meeting people and playing games while the rain poured down around us.

The beach is an easy walk from the hostel; the hostel also sponsors forest and beach walks, kayak and reef trips, 4WD trips, etc.

Take advantage of this naturally beautiful area.

Flights from Singapore to Cairns (direct flight)

by xuessium

This is a monopoly. Only 1 airline flies this route.

The journey is about 5.5 hours and the airline used to be Australian Airlines.

Qantas has announced in that they have plans to phase out Australian Airlines in order to focus their resources on Jetstar and Jetstar Asia.

JETSTAR now flies between Singapore and Cairns directly.

You must see the reef!

by Kate-Me

This almost goes without saying, that you must see the reef, any way you can (or several ways)
There are many ways - snorkelling on a dive trip as we did, diving, glass bottomed boat tours, semi submersible boats, underwater viewing platforms, aquarium viewing.....

Our outer Barrier Reef snorkelling day out (4 hours out and back and 3 on the reef) was one of the very best things of our Queensland holiday.
