Cheapest way of traveling to carins from coffs harbour?

by patsandy100

HI, I have been looking over the past few months for a cheap way of traveling to Cairns. It is just myself who is going and I do not have alot of money to spend so least is best. from coffs harbour i can not fly directly there so i would have to catch a bus to Brisbane then fly to cairns. Returning after 10 days will cost me $400+ and thats to exspensive.
Can anyone suggesdt a cheaper way?

Thanks.

It's a long journey so time-wise probably easier to fly. Could even be cheaper than bus or train. Virgin Blue fly Coffs to Bris and then either Jetstar or Virgin Blue do the Bris - Cairns sector.
You could look at Greyhound Australia for bus services or Countrylink XPT for train service.

Hi again, Virginblue doesn't actually fly to brisbane it goes to sydney then to Brisbane so that might cost to much. it cost $63 for a student fare by greyhound to Brisbane (one way). Any other ideas?

If you are staying at hostels or caravan parks, maybe you could hook up with other travellers that have a car or van and offer to split the fuel to Brisbane ? Maybe worth putting a post on VT asking same thing. Try posting to NSW forum.
When Jetstar/Virgin Blue have specials on, sometimes you might pick up a cheap flight Bris-Cairns. As I said, it's a long way, and cheaper for me to fly than drive with fuel prices getting so bad.

Do you drive?
Maybe you could hire a car from Coffs Harbour to Brisbane.
( Check the car hire places out and make sure they don't charge you are huge drop off fee. Find one that has no drop off fee)
It isn't a big drive to Brisbane and you would only have to hire the car for a day. This wouldn't break the bank at all. I would say around 65.00Aus for a small car, maybe less.
Then fly Virgin to Cairns. There are direct flights daily, there are some around 159.00Aus one way.
I think that would be the cheapest way.

Travel Tips for Cairns

The Great Dry Interior

by Bwana_Brown

Once we had driven up off the coast onto the plateau above, it did not take long to begin to experience what the great dry Australian outback must be like. We were only on the edge of it and already it was noticeably short of trees and very hot.

Need new books?

by ettiewyn about Second Hand Book Shop

This book shop is located in Grafton Street, opposite Gilligan's Backpackers. It has all kinds of second hand books in a good condition: Fiction, fantasy, romance, thrillers etc. There is also a big section with the old favourites, like Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, as well as as a selection of new books only of Australian writers (very interesting). They also sell new Lonely Planets of many countries.

If you need books and do not want to spend a fortune in the book shops in Cairns Central, this is the place to go!

So many little restaurants to choose from

by scharneckk about Rahmah's - Malaysian

This was my favourite restaurant in Cairns .. I went four times in the 10 days I was there .. I love hot and spicy food so this was awesome!

I also went to Little Italy which made beautiful Pizza's and Pasta's! BEAUTIFUL! And for the right price!

There are many cafes, restaurants and pubs to choose from ... I loved the 'Red Chicken Curry' - ask for it with the 'sambal' if you enjoy REALLY (and I stress REALLY!) spicy foods ... it give the curry some zing!

Knee-deep in Roos

by rhondav_2004

My favorite activity while in Cairns was going to the Night Zoo...You are picked up at the hotel, and delivered to the Cairns Zoo at around 6P.M. You are served a wonderful bar-b-que steak dinner with all the fixins. While you are enjoying dinner, there is a singer/guitarist and all of the staff are dressed like Australian cowboys from the outback. After dinner, they give you a flashlight and take you on a walking tour of the nocturnal animals at the zoo...the last stop is around a camp-fire where they serve 'damper' which is a kind of bread (has a consistency and taste similar to banana bread-but not as sweet). The intent is not so much for you to eat the bread as it is for the 75-100 kangaroos that you are surrounded by...THEY LOVE IT! And we had a blast feeding the roos!

Snorkel or Dive the Great Barrier Reef

by pacific_sol

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the only living organism that can be seen from outer space, so you definitely have to make time to swim, snorkel, or dive the reef! I'm not a great swimmer, but I was able to snorkel for a little bit, and it was amazing how clear the water was. It was also neat to see the colorful fish and the different types of coral.
