Mud Bugs
by dlandt
Also known as Morton Bay Bugs, or just plain Bugs, these are a tasty little local treat. I don't think its possible to get them in other parts of Australia but these are like large crayfish or small lobsters that look absolutely ancient or even prehistoric. Nevertheless, they are very tasty, with a sweet, succulent meat that I found very appealing. The trick is getting past the sight of them. For seafood lovers, this isn't to be missed.
DRIZABONE
by BerniShand about EVERYWHERE
there are lots of shops in Cairns selling Drizabone coats, jackets, hats etc
the Drizabones are manufactured in Queensland and prices here were much lower than we had seen in Sydney or the Blue Mountains
we had bought Drizabone riding coats in Katoomba simply because it was so wet there, and we loved them, they were so cosy and dry, but they were 50AUD cheaper in Cairns
you can even buy Drizabone coats for dogs ! our coats were a really great bargain even at the higher price we paid, in the UK we would have had to pay 175 GBP instead of 175 AUD
Fine dining
by SPW about Reef House
We had read that Reef House had received many awards for its dining room so we celebrated the last night of our holiday at this restaurant.
It is open air, with storm screens in case of unpredictable tropical weather. All the food was excellent: we decided to share 3 entrees and then we were able to manage a dessert each!
The boned quail and mushroom was probably the best but the seafood dishes were close behind.
Cape Tribulation
by didgeridorien
I went here with Oz Backpacker Tours and they were very good. The first stop was in Port Douglas at the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, that has over 180 animals species, including the rare tree kangaroo. The secon stop is a cruise on the Daintree River to see some crocodiles. Then up to Cape Tribulation for lunch and we saw the Mossman Gorge on the way back to Cairns.
The Lagoon
by northeast80
It may surprise some of you to hear that Cairns doesn't have a beach, it did me.
So they built a 'lagoon' with a shallow end for kids and a deeper part for adults to swim, there's a fountain you can play about in.
There's outdoor showers, lockers, lifeguards, toilet block and a little snack bar, a grassed area to lie an and if you can catch a spot sand too.
There's also BBQ's and picknick benches dotted around too.
