Need help select dive site at GOR

by Mali_05

Hi all,

I hv plan to visit Cairns early next year. Here is my draft plan.
2-3 days – scuba (Liveaboard)
1 day – snorkeling
1 day – Green Island/Low Isles
Kindly pls advise the beautiful dive site which I should go and how hard to find “Wally” fish :). And pls tell if there’s any other place that shouldn’t be missed.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry everyone, i mean GBR, not GOR.

Hi and welcome.
Your trip to Cairns sounds very exciting.
The Great Barrier Reef in the Cairns/Port Douglas area has many good diving sites--Low Isles being one of them and see you have incorporated that already with Green Island for snorkeling.

Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef are two popular sites to snorkel and dive.
Do you mean (Clown fish)" Wally fish"? if so then no one can guarantee if you see them, there are so many different species I believe you will enjoy it all.

Most dive boats will take you to the best sites.
Here is a link.

Cairns has so many wonderful places to see,the Daintree Rainforest is a must in my opinion,if you have a car you can stop off at Palm Cove and Port Douglas,
the flora and fauna of this region is unique.

I am not sure what your interests are except the Barrier reef so here is another link for you to have an idea of what to see and do in 2011.

Hope this helps .

Hi Tropicrd

Many Thanks for yr reply. I've checked the liveaboard vessel and hv 2 choices below:
a) 3d/2n with Prodive, divesites are flynn/milln/pellowe/thetford
b) 2d/1n with MV.Kangaroo which as same divesite as above. And book other vessel for 1 day dive to another divesites such as norman/saxon/hastings and Agincourt

which one is better?

Re: Need help select dive site at GOR

Hi again,I would go for B: MV Kangaroo but this is only a personal choice--I cannot comment on A: because I do not know much about them.

Now 'Wally fish' I am not sure if you mean the little Clown fish or the Reef giant Cod that you see on a dive.As I suggested you will see so much and many species you will be amazed.
If you need to know more you can contact me.
Regards Dorrise

Hi! Dorrise

Think like me. Yr vote help me make decision easier. It’s not easy for me to come again (on my budget), so I’d like to see GBR in various views (as much as possible). But I’m thinking of “A” just because “ A” is cheaper and comfortable.

"Wally" is giant Cod. I found her on the website. She look friendly and lovely so much.

Thank you again for yr info. Hope to welcome you in Thailand.

Travel Tips for Cairns

by Anne12

The most asked question in the travel forums is...when is the best time to come to Cairns.

So I will try to give you an idea how to decide when to come.
I would visit here at any time of year. Cairns does not close because it rains. It just slows down a little.
During the off season you can get great accommodation prices. Not that the tours are any different in price. You may however grab something at a bargain price. The airfares from the south of Aus also can be a lot cheaper...
It may rain, but you will never be cold and dry out rather quickly:)
You can't swim in the beaches at this time of year as the stingers don't like to share their space:)
BUT accommodation here is all set up for this and have swimming pools. Also there is a great swimming pool at the Esplanade area and other water holes around to have a dip in.

The wet season officially starts from November to March. NOW this doesn't mean it rains non stop all these months. For an example, November 2007 wasn't wet, December had a little rain and Janurary 2008 also had a little rain...it is now Feburary 3rd and we have just started to have rain, mainly of a night, through the day it has been overcast with sunny times.
The humidity is high and it is hot!!
More rain is expected now during the next couple of months and also a cyclon or two can come to visit us. No one really knows , only the weather gods!!

The high season is the dry season, this is from around April onwards to November.
During this time you can have perfect days for weeks....BUT then I have known years where you can get rain in the middle of July!! Once again it's the weather gods!!!
If you want to beat the rain, July, August, September are really the best months. These months you can also swim in the beaches.

So you will just have to make up your own mind:)

Take the skyrail or the train (or both) through the rainforest to the town of Kuranda. Shopping is the main activity here, although you can go to the Butterfly sanctuary, or the Kuala Gardens and hold a kuala for a photo op. Fun day trip!

Greyhound to/from Cairns

by ettiewyn

You can reach Cairns by greyhound from Brisbane and thus travel up or down the east coast if you like. If you come from the QLD outback or want go there, you need to change busses in Townsville and jump on the Townsville-Tennant Creek-connection. This is absolutely no problem, you can just book the passage and the busses wait for each other.

The terminal in Cairns is located right on the Esplanade after you passed the Lagoon, outside the building where the counters of the reef boats are.

Quick & Cheap Meals on The Esplanade

by grkboiler about Food Court

For a quick and inexpensive bite to eat, there is a food court on The Esplanade located near the Night Markets and all the hostels. When I was there, there was Chinese, fish & chips, burgers, pizza, and Middle-Eastern.

passions is the reef

by tropical_ellie

I recommend that you go and see the Reef. No matter what! Even if you can not swim. Theirs all types of cruises out their that cater for your needs.

I went on Passions of Paradise and it was EXCELLENT. First class. I highly recommend it.
