are there any accommodations near the airport?
Im not really sure. But i know you can go to www.americanpassportandtravel.com and find out. its a travel site but if you email them your question they will tell you, and also find the cheapest place to stay.
I'm not sure, but I think there are no accommodations close to the airport.
But why want you to stay close to the airport ??
The airport is rather close to Cairns with a lot of accommodations and it is very easy to travel to the airport.

Cairns airport is only 10 minutes from the city centre, so, I would suggest that you stay in Cairns central area.If you are only here for a night, this would be the way to go as the night markets/shops/restaurants are all in walking distance in city area.There is a huge amount of accommodation in Cairns.
I do hope you are staying for more than one night!! You need at least 3 days to do the main tourist things here..Rainforest/Reef etc.
One of the places that would be the closest to the airport is the Lakes resort.

Does look a little bit strange answer, but there has been another posting about a hotel in the city centre of Cairns deleted.
The Great Barrier Reef is 2nd to none when it comes to snorkeling and scuba diving. If you don't know how to scuba dive, there is no better setting to learn than this.
The counters on the lower level of the Pier Marketplace are a good place to find a reputable dive company. Most companies should provide all equipment and wetsuits. All you really need to bring should be sunscreen and an underwater camera.
This is a guided bar crawl taking you to 5 bars around town, it takes you from a bar called Piranha where all the girls are given nuts and the guys given bolts in all different sizes, it's an ice breaking game where everyone goes around talking to eachother and trying to find a match. free shots for winners and it gets everyone chatting so a good start to the evening. Then moving on to a sports bar, casino, tavern and leaving you in a nightclub. Free entry to all 5 places and free shos in each, ticket price also includes a t-shirt and a group photo of the whole group. A good night out and a good way to meet fellow travellers.
After deciding that Thai food was we were looking forward to we decided on Choc Dee which is in a group of upmarket restaurants on the foreshore in front of the Outrigger Beach Club complex.
We were shown to our table and provided menus very promptly and that was that. After waiting 20 minutes to at least place a drink order, and seeing other tables seated after us being served food and drinks we decided to walk out and spend our money in the restaurant next door. I was looking forward to a Malaysian Chicken Curry but I guess we will never know if was good or not.
You can sign up for one of many daily cruises to the Great Barrier Reef for a day of snorkelling and scuba diving. The water is so clear and the clarity so god, that it feels like you're snorkelling in a pool. The colurful reefs are not very deep, so you can see the reef life clearly from the surface. Of course, if you prefer a closer encounter, you can opt for scuba diving.
If you're at the Milaa Milaa falls, you have to do a swim. The water is very cold, but once you're in the water it's ok.
It's really fun to swim behind the waterfall and then swim through the waterfall.
Another little thing to do there is to stand in front of the waterfall, look at the waterfalls for 10 seconds, then look next to the waterfall at the rocks.
It'll have a weird effect.
