Palm Cove
by colin_bramso
A northern beach village that should be on your list to visit, or even to have as your accommodation base, is Palm Cove. It has a good beach, plenty of accommodation from 5 star resorts to a caravan park, shops, cafes, restaurants. The Novotel Resort also is a Country Club, with tennis courts and a resort golf course.
The very attractive main street along the beach is lined by huge Melaleuca trees, which locals say are hundreds of years old.
Watch out for the Tree Kangaroo
by ettiewyn
A tree kangaroo??? Yes, there really are kangaroos that live on trees! They only live in Northern Queensland and in New Guinea. They are a threatened species and very rare - but keep your eyes open during dawn, maybe you are lucky!
On the ground they only move very slow, but in the trees they are active and swift. They can jump down on the ground from very high without being hurt. If you are not lucky in the wild, you can also see them in several wildlife parks.
Great place for Italian food
by sue&gene about LaPizza
Anne12 from VT met us at the airport and took us to lunch. We parked and had a nice walk through Carins and stopped to eat at LaPizza. We ate outside. The food was very good and the day was perfect for eating outside. It sure gave us some of the flavor of the area. I had ravioli that was pumpkin filled and had a nice butter sauce. It was very tasty. We do not use pumpkin in the same way that Aussies do and I did enjoy this use of pumpkin.
Dive or Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef
by bsfreeloader
Beginning off the coast from Bundaberg and extending 2300 kilometers north to New Guinea, the Great Barrier Reef truly is one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Cyclones, coral bleaching caused by global-warming, and tourist trample have all had a negative effect on the reef in certain places, but areas where the reef remains intact are as pristine and spectacular as anywhere in the world. The diversity and color of the fishes and corals has to be seen to be believed. Colors usually only found in Crayola’s largest box of crayons come to life here like nowhere else I have ever seen. Throw in an occasional turtle gliding by or stingray or shark, and you have the makings of an unforgettable day. As is true anywhere, diving will bring you closer to larger species while snorkeling in the shallows will allow you to see all of the colorful fish more vividly. You really can’t go wrong either way, but I would suggest spending several days on the reef to permit enough time to do some of both.
The rainforest
by HeidiR
From cairns the other main attraction besides the reef is the rainforest. You could just go to Kuranda on the skyrail where you will see the rainforest. But to be honest I think it is far too touristy, your much better off going further north perhapsstaying in Port Douglas overnight and going to daintree rainforest and cape trib
