Say "hi" to high rise
by iandsmith
I'm not sure it's my favourite thing but it is certainly an unavoidable thing. I can remember back in the 60's and 70's when this was the crane capital of Australia. Today you can see the results. Heck, we even have the world's highest residential block right on the Gold Coast. It's the tall one in the background.
The area shown here encompasses the hub of Surfers Paradise. This is where most of the nightlife is but it is certainly not the only place for entertainment on the Gold Coast.
The Green Room

Let's face it, the only real sport travel to the GC is for surfing. Sure there are rugby teams, both league and union, some great jet boat racing and of course the Indy car races but surfing is the main stay of the Coast.
The best breaks vary from day to day but the most reliable is Duranbah at the southern end of the coast. The are others but it is the best on most days but the one we all wait for is when Kirra is pumping. It is the longest break in the world and I have ridden it for a kilometre. Sure it is a long walk back but it is worth it. Most surfers bring their own boards but there are tons of board retailers on the coast from small single operator shapers up to Billabong.

Best Seafood in Surfers
by Keli_em about Trawlers
Finding this place was a happy accident, the seafood there was fab, and very reasonably priced. It's a very large restaurant, so you don't really get the "personal" feel as much, and it certainly wasn't as kid-friendly as some of the other places I'd eaten at, but all the same, great food, yum...
Most of the staff were friendly (a smile goes a long way), however I was quite disappointed with one of the waiters when I asked him for a highchair, to which he responded by storming off, returning with a highchair and muttering "here" before storming off again, without showing me how to put it together... Hmmm... The garlic prawns were nice - not cooked in the traditional way but very nice indeed :)
