Down by the sea
by iandsmith
It's a fair bet that one of the things you'll do is go to the beach while you're on the Gold Coast. That is, after all, the reason the whole place started. When I first came up here from Newcastle it was basically Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise. My first trip also co-incided with the commencement of the never-ceasing boom and the sprawl of development that seeks to swallow up every last bit of land in the area, sometimes with little thought of the environment.
I can recall a time when there was a warning sign about koalas crossing near Currumbin. Of course, they never had a chance. They only ones you'll see here now are in a zoo. Once you rip the habitat out it's bye, bye animals.
The lasting thing is the beaches, but even that has changed. What used to be three breaks at Snapper Rocks, Coolongatta and Kirra is now just one when the big swells roll in as tonnes of sand and some flawed development have seen the beach change shape forever.......................until man decides to change it again.
This particular photo is of North Burleigh or Miami, take your pick, they're so close they overlap. It just happens to be my grandaughter in the snap on a day when I had my first surf of the year and had my first day at the beach with her.
Beginning of Pathway Construction
by aussirose
Hubby & crew had to clear a nice path and fence if off before going any further. Each side of the path looks a bit bare. That's because they removed a tonnes of bitu bush, a weed that had gone out of control. But it wasn't long before the natural Australian bush grew back.
O'Reilly's Guesthouse - Tree-Top Walk
by ATXtraveler
Located about 70km west of the Gold Coast within Lamington National Park is a spot called O'Reilly's Guesthouse, which has a spectactular tree-top walk using suspension bridges 20-30 meters above the rainforest canopy.
There are some beautiful views to be seen here, and although my fear of heights kept me from going to the top, Sarah ventured further up one of the lookout posts, to get some great photos of the treetops!
The suspension bridges support up to 6 people per span, so for those people like me that are afraid of heights, please respect this... otherwise I may throw you off!
Hire a Car
by ATXtraveler
Sarah and I decided that the best way to see the Gold Coast is by hiring a car. We definitely packed on the miles with this little Renault... I would highly recommend getting a 4 cylinder to save on your petrol bill!!
We chose Budget from the online deals available from Brisbane!

The smell even before you get in the door is amazing. The service is 1st class, the decorations are beautiful. The walls are filled with 25,000 bottles of wine which you can order with your meal, or buy some to take home. Mornay Bugs (Moreton Bay Bugs that is!)
