Surfers Paradise to Cairns
by RKyle
Will be travelling to Cairns from Surfers Paradise to arrive there Oct. 22.
Bus, Train, how long is the trip? Will have 2 days to make it.
Any suggested stops along the way?
Re: Surfers Paradise to Cairns

Do you realize that over land that is nearly 1800 km ?
If you take bus or train, you will not have time for stops if you only take 2 days.

If you catch the Tilt train to Cairns, it will take approx 1 days travel.
The "sunlander" train goes to Cairns, and takes 31hours, both depart from Roma street station.
By car, you will need the 2 days to get there safely. Lots of people try to do it in one long hit, and end up killed through driver fatique, and killing others as well. Its a long way, and you wouldn't have time for sightseeing on the way.

The others have explained the distance and time that bus or train takes. Your best way, and probably cheapest, will be to fly. Check out VirginBlue and Jetstar for their fares.

Thanks for all the info. it was what I needed to make a decision! Looks like I will either allow more time or fly.

also be very aware of the hot and humid weather during this time--if you are driving make sure you have air con in your car and plenty of drinking water--it is a long long drive and fatigue is one of the biggest killers on our roads.
I agree with the latest reply and look into flying.
Have a safe trip.

Visit the beaches and many malls. SeaWorld is an absolute must. I was impressed with the amount of couples, young and old, that show displays of affection in public. Everything seems to be family oriented. Visits to the beaches even prove this family unity.
What to wear
by marki
This really depends where youre coming from !!
I live here and wear a T Shirt and Shorts all year round, even on winter nights. If youre from Melbourne, Europe etc. you'll find it very mild. If youre coming from Cairns, South East Asia etc perhaps long pants and a jacket.
To be quantitative: Daytime temperatures 21-23C, Nightime 12-14C. Going inland nightime temperatures get colder.
Harbour Town Shopping Centre. ...

Harbour Town Shopping Centre. It's a bit out of the way from the 'touristy' shopping areas of Broadbeach/Surfers/Southport, but definately worth a visit. The whole place (and let me tell you - IT'S HUGE!) is full of bargain shopping. Here you'll find factory outlets for every type of fashion possible - even the big european designer labels - over 50% off normal retail prices. This is the website listing all of the shops, etc.

You can spend ALL day here!
Kid-friendly Eatin'
by Keli_em about Barney's in Surfers Paradise
I loved this little place - I found Barney's a nice, friendly little restaurant/cafe with very nice food. It's only a small shop, probably seating between 20-30 people, which creates a nice, personal atmosphere.
The staff there are lovely - very friendly and obliging. And most importantly (for me), they were able to laugh at the fact that my 1 year old threw his spaghetti all over the floor... oh dear...
This place is great if you have young children: the staff entertain them well, and KIDS EAT FREE there! What more could you want? I can't remember what it's called, but I had a fantastic chicken dish with avocado and almonds in a creamy sauce - beautiful!
Ripleys Believe it or not.
by bkarjee
The all popular Ripleys believe it or not Museum at the Cavill Mall in Surfers Paradise is a good time pass with family, where you can spend 1 hour viewing all the startling facts of life. It is open from 09:00 hrs to 23:00 hrs and there are more then 100 exhibits. This is the only Ripleys museum in Australia.
