Mercure Resort: Hillside Villas

We stayed in the Hillside Villas at the Mercure Resort. These were more expensive than the other styles of accommodation but also the best fitted-out in terms of space and comforts. As the name suggests, these are on the hillside at the back of the resort - this means that they are furthest away from the beach but on the plus side they have fantastic big balconies with views out to the mainland and the water.

The villas have a double, a single and a rollaway bed and a large bathroom with bath and (two!) vanities. None of the accommodation on Great Keppel has cooking facilities.
If you do as we did and bring across a couple of nice bottles of wine, there was nothing better than sitting out on the balcony watching the sunset with good friends, beautiful weather and a cheeky Sauv-Blanc!

Mercure Resort: Garden View Rooms

We did not stay in these rooms but took a couple of pics for reference. These are the cheapest rooms on the resort and are situated at the back of the main apartments with views in towards the green lawns or the tennis courts. The rooms are fairly small and motel-style...the plans on the resort website show them as double and 2 single beds, small shower/bath and toilet and balcony at the front.

Would be good for a shorter stay or to save a bit of money, hey....if you are spending all your time walking, swimming, sunbaking, windsurfing....you won't be in the rooms long anyway!

geffs place: backpak keppel

geffs place is i think the best place to stay on the island, its a great backpackers ste amongst the tropical surroundings with bungalows and camping grounds, prices are low they have all the facilities youll need and the staff are more than helpful and friendly.
theres a resort on the island theat was built years ago when the island was being promoted more to travellers, but since then the locals seem to like keeping things quieter ( sorry i just couldnt keep it secret) and more people were staying at geffs when iwas there.

Great Keppel Island Holiday Village YHA

So we were supposed to be picked up from the boat but they forgot! It wasn't that far anyway.
An expensive hostel- there were no dorm rooms left so the three of us shared a two man tent, with the person on the mattress on the floor paying less. This cost AU$27 a night.
We hired snorkle gear from the hostel, they have free cooked rice ever evening, the manager or a helper cooked lovely muffins for everyone in the morning. The generator gets turned off at 10.30pm, most people just stay up talking in the covered outdoor tables.
The dorms didn't look that nice so we were glad we were in a tent, even with the nestling possums!! There was a mother and child nesting inbetween the fly sheet and tent.
A very short walk to the beach.
A friend we'd met stayed on longer to work there for her rent for a couple of hours, she had a great week there.
Just had a look at the modern prices (we were there in 2005) and it's now a massive AU$31 for a dorm bed!!! Wow.

I liked the atmosphere of this place, but it's very expensive, the dorm rooms were not nice, cramped and not very clean. Kitchen was good though.
