The only place to stay(literally!)
COME HERE!!! I have been to Heron Island twice and can't wait to go again! To get to this beautiful island you have to take a boat(pretty choppy-take a seasickness pill!) or a helicopter(amazing views!!!) from Brisbane. The rooms are mostly townhouses with some private apartments. All rooms are on the beach with ocean views and there are no locks. This illustrates how safe and inclusive this resort is because there are no day trippers. Everyone stays at the resort for at least two days due to the limited transportation. The food is INCREDIBLE. The breakfast buffet still appears in my dreams and lunch is even better. I've never had so many exotic fruits and with all the swimming, snorkeling and diving, you work up a big appetite. The dinner menu generally presents three options for appetizers, entrees and deserts. I believe Sunday is a seafood buffet.
The only bad thing is that the island is a bird sanctuary and so during mating season, the birds get rather loud. They didn't bother me too much, but I know some of my family had to use earplugs to sleep.
Unique Quality: Half the island is owned by the resort and the other half by the University of Queensland which makes the island particularly private and well-managed. You can tour the University's aquariums and learn about their efforts to study and conserve Heron Island's ecosystems. The pool is wonderful because it's right on the beach with a fantastic view of the ocean. I believe it's filled with salt water so that you can learn to scuba dive in it (I did this!!) The scuba/snorkeling instructors are extremely nice and there are trips at least twice a day. You can literally walk out of your room onto the beach and straight into the water or you can take the boat trips to the reef. My favorite time is March/April because that's when the baby turtles hatch from their sandy nests! At night you can see them popping out of the sand and crawling towards the moon-lit water...it’s amazing. The water is warm but not reminiscent of a bath-tub and there are animals everywhere!!
