Lady Elliot Island..

by Sweetberry1

Hervey Bay is a major access point for Lady Elliot Island, first of the Islands of The Great Barrier Reef. Flights run several times daily with the opportunity to stay on the small coral cay or just visit for the day.

Hervey Bay

by robertgaz

Hervey Bay is a small city in south eastern Queensland and is located approximately 3.5 hours drive north of Brisbane

It is a short distance from Fraser Island, which is the world's largest sand island, and Lady Elliot Island, a pristine resort island on the Great Barrier Reef.

The local economy relies mainly on tourism, which includes whale watching from mid July until early November.

Lady Elliot Island - Qld

This is the first coral cay in the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. It's a true birdwatchers paradise as birds nest all over the island, also the spot is known for his Green and Loggerhead Turtle's and a good healthy population of Manta Rays.
Once you're on the island on a day trip ore for several days you can dip into one of the most beauitiful coral reefs in this world.
From 1863 to 1969 the island was largely destroyed due vegetation destruction, harvesting sea-birds and introducing animals on the island. Since then all the goats where killed and revegetation programma's started. Now on small scale tourist are allowed on the island.
You can enjoy ?reef? experience? with that includes snorkelling, scuba diving, reef walking and swimming.
Other activities include: bird watching - black-napped terns, crested terns, roseate terns, red-tailed Tropicbird, brown boobies, black & brown noddies, buff-banded rails, Eastern reef egrets and oyster-catchers. Whale watching is between June to October as they migrate north. Turtles use the island to nest during November to February. See the amazing coral spawning during November and December.
I really enjoyed my visit at end October 2002 here! And I can advise anyone to take a flight with Oz horizons from Bundaberg to here! It cost about Aus Dollar $ 225 to get one day up and down!
You have to imagine that it is a small island with a airstrip cut the island in two, and there is scrub on both sides of the island, in this scrub there are some walking paths and here you can find all these tame and good behaving birds. Its not a cheap visit but it is unforgettable in the breeding season.

Lady Elliot Island was formed over a 3000 year period and is home to 200,000 nesting birds in summer, as well as nesting sea turtles. Renowned for dive sites and snorkelling, this coral island has a small nature retreat. On the mainland, Mon Repos is a major sea turtle rookery.

Lady Musgrave Island has the largest navigable lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef at 1200ha. Heron Island, a Great Barrier Reef coral cay, offers turtle nesting tours and reef walks. Heron has been named one of the best diving locations in the world and is a sanctuary for 100,000 Black Noddy Terns.

Boyne Island is linked by bridge to Tannum Sands with long stretches of sandy beaches. Great Keppel Island is one of the Keppel Bay Islands with tall forests, sandy beaches and a huge array of activities. Accommodation includes backpacker and resort facilities.

From Mackay with 32 beaches nearby, visit Brampton and Keswick Islands with their sandy beaches, cockatoos and kangaroos. The Whitsundays are situated amongst 74 islands. Go island hopping, take a one day or longer boat cruise or charter a yacht. This premier sailing destination has a range of accommodation from five star luxury to bungalow style or family resorts. Whitsunday resort islands include Hamilton, Hayman, South Molle, Long, Lindeman, Daydream. Hook Island has fjod-like inlets popular as yacht anchorages. Just further north are the beautiful and secluded beaches around Bowen.

Have a look at the website:

Lady Elliot Island is a very popular diving destination, but if you are leaving from Hervey Bay, you will need to have a short flight to get there.
Also..........if you are going to be in Hervey Bay during season- July-November, catch a whale-watching cruise. It is just fantastic.

Another great snorkeling destination on Great Barrier Reef is Port Douglas- closest town to actual reef, and daily cruises to inner and outer reef. All snorkeling equipment provided on board, as are meals.

If you are loking for a day trip snorkeliing, you can go from the town of 1770 to Lady Musgrave Island for a day. However 1770 is not easily accessible unless you have a car.

Yes, we have been and it was a great disappointment from disinterested, bored staff, disgusting food, and mediocre snorkelling compared to say the Red Sea.
One week of hell......nothing like the website. The prices are high but the experience doesn't match. Thanks for your input.

Advice Pls: Lady Elliot Island vs other islands in Great Barrier Reef - Pros/Cons

by Anchik

Hi everyone,

we are traveling in Australia for 3 weeks (Nov/Dec), covering Sydney, Brisbane, Alice Springs & Uluru. We would like to see the Great Barrier Reef, of course, but we are not avid divers or snorkelers. Initially we were thinking of flying up to Cairns and going to one of the famous islands (Hamilton, Green, Heron, etc), but given that we will not want to dive/snorkel for days, seems like a time-costly excercise. We did read that you can take a 1 day trip from Brisbane to Lady Elliot island which should give us a taste of the Great Barrier Reef without adding another destination (Cairns) to our itinerary.

Question is: if we only see Lady Elliot island - is that enough to get a taste of the Great Barrier Reef or should we invest the time and travel north to some of the other islands around Cairns?

Thank you!

Budget way to Hervey Bay

by ChineseDoll

Hi

What's the budget way going to Hervey Bay from Brisbane except by train or car hire?

We are actually travelling to Lady Elliot Island and since we don't want to pay much airfare by flying from Brisbane, we have to go via Hervey Bay to the island.

Thanks in advance!

Bus is the other option.

Look at Suntour buses and Greyhound.

I am sure they will have web pages.

As previously mentioned, coach is way of getting to hervey bay.. go to www.suntours.net.au

Taking the tilt train should be around a similar price as to that of a coach and Im guessing would be a lot quicker. Have a look at www.qr.com.au, they normally will quote you a price immediately on their website.
