Queensland All Over: Places a bit different to stay

by wise23girl

You come to Queensland ....you do not know the names of many of our towns...Oh yes you know Brisbane...and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts ...and Cairns of course...but there is so much more.... and you want to find a hotel...a pub maybe...a camping ground....a hide-a-way that is really super or is just that bit different....well I have some ideas for you.

But before I start naming places to unpack your bags and rest your weary head on a soft feather pillow or your camp bed do go on my virtual tour of Queensland and get a feel for some of the smaller towns out there....

So some different places to stay....well how about the Bull and Barley in Cambooya on the Darling Downs...a fully restored PUB gem from the early 1900's that still retains its original character. (2 hours west from Brisbane)

And now for Sunshine Coast Hinterland and a bit of upmarket LUXURY you will love The Secrets on the Lake tree houses (about 1 1/2 hours north from Brisbane)

Another idea 'no ordinary spot' and where you can CAMP is The Eco Village at Crystal Waters, between Kenilworth and Maleny Sunshine Coast hinterland. (about 1 1/2 hours north from Brisbane)

Now for the BACKPACKERS I have one for you at beautiful Mission Beach......we are in the tropics now halfway between Cairns and Townsville.... Mission Beach Retreat right in the middle of town and right next to the beach. Check out the website.

And further north you can stay somewhere that is not camping , not a motel, and not a hotel nor a resort but restored Railway Carriages Actually have a look at all the options for an UNDARA EXPERIENCE....from Cairns by road (4 hours), coach or the Savannah lander (train)

DARLINGTON PARK: SCENIC CAMPGROUND

by balhannah

Darlington Park in SE Queensland is a favorite of mine for camping.

Located about 90kms from Brisbane, or 1.5hours drive, you do need a car to come here.

The park is situated in the world-heritage listed Scenic Rim. This park is quite popular, and when you reach here, you will understand why. It's located in a pretty setting, where the green grass is mown, there are gum trees for shade, Toilets, a caretaker & kiosk, an Oval, and lastly, the beautiful crystal clear water of the Albert river cascading over the rocks.
It is somewhere for everyone to come and enjoy.
At night, it's only the Owl's and Cow's that you will hear, and the stars will be very bright as there isn't any lighting.
If you are bored, a short drive away is the Lost World National Park.
Remember to stock up at Beaudesert for fuel and food, as there isn't much here.

TO FIND DARLINGTON PARK.............
From Brisbane, take the Mt. Lindesay highway [13] to Beaudesert. At Beaudesert traffic lights, turn sharp left [Kerry road], and follow this single lane, scenic bitumen road until you reach Darlington Park.

CAMPSITE FEES will be collected by the Caretaker.
$5 adults, $2.50 children, $13.50 family

Ph: 5544 8120 to make a booking.

Check out my BEAUDESERT page for more information on the area.

Quiet, scenic, let your worries fade away!

Jupiters Hotel and Casino: Luxury for you

by wise23girl

The rooms are spotless. Everything you might want is available.....The beds are comfortable. Many rooms have a view. Corner rooms are particularly nice but for the top service you book into the executive rooms...18th floor and up.

What they say:
"With 594 superbly appointed guest rooms you can choose what's right for you. Will you live it up in one of our executive rooms, sit back and relax in a superior room or soak up the sun on your own personal balcony in one of our club suites? Whichever you choose, you'll always enjoy a breathtaking view either across the pacific to the east, or over the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland to the west."

Some rooms look over the atrium. You can see the entrance to the casino itself.

Besides Spinners Restaurant there are a few others places to dine or eat...more upmarket or more everyday.

Anyway read the hotel directory and do a bit of exploring...find the dress shop...the gym...the games room..the pool....the gift shop...the newsagent the TAB (to bet on the horses)

It may not be unique but it is pretty good.(Unique means there is nothing else like it by definition) And the Hotel/Casino is on an island...and you can walk around the buildings which is quite pleasant stroll and you can cross the road one of the shopping centres...just use the pedestrian crossings please. There is a monorail to the beach side....much safer than trying to cross the main"drag"
It isn't hard to get used to this type of luxury. When you arrive porters open the door of your car...your luggage is whisked away....everything you might need is available. Valet parking if you wish (free for Black tier members) but there is a special locked parking area for hotel guests if you prefer to be independent....and ample parking anyway. Even if you vehicle is high there is an area to accommodate you. And disabled parking of course.

It is very difficult to quote a price...There are many different rates at different times. Sometimes you can be lucky and find one of those last minute deals....wotif.com for example...

Lakeside Treehouses: Something Unique in Queensland

by wise23girl

Come to The Blackall Range... Near Montvlle, Queensland you will find accommodation to die for........

The Secrets on The Lake Complex.

The owners say it is the perfect place for romance...absolutely. Honeymooners love it I am told but we loved it too.
Imagine a winding hand carved wooden walkway leading to an individually themed treehouse offering supreme privacy nestled high in the treetops with stunning views over Lake Baroon. Think of a double spa bath...log fire....champagne breakfasts.
On the website you can find a photo showing the tree houses dotted amongst the tree tops...with the possums...named Dragonfly, The Nest, Platypus.......

There are many luxury extras available...a barbecue hamper for example...a light 3 course evening meal delivered to your door....or you can join others for morning tea and lunch in the Lake Cafe.

There is much to do....swimming...canoeing...fishing or you can attempt one of the Great Walks of Queensland 56 k of bushwalking experience. Horse riding is available and of course all the other attractions you will read about in Montville and Mapleton pages. And of course the Sunshine Coast is not far away.

I have never seen anything like this before...but check the website for prices.....

Tivoli Caravan Park: Ipswich on a budget

by jewels63

On the fringe of Ipswich CBD is Tivoli Caravan village. You can pitch a tent, caravan or hire a cabin. There is an amenites block and swimming pool. 5 minutes into town by car, or bus outside.
Down the back is a Baseball club which you can visit, have a drink, play pokies, have some dinner, or watch them practise hitting a ball!

There is no kiosk on site, so provisions have to be got from local shops.

Treasury Hotel: INDULGE YOURSELF ITS THE BEST

by wise23girl

We just love staying here but I have to confess that as members of Brisbane's Treasury Casino we do get a special rate if we are lucky but you will have guessed that.

The rooms are unique. Well I think so. I have not been in every one but I understand they are all different. But everything that you could want is there. And there is room service as good as anywhere else in the world that we have been.

Just read the information book. You will be amazed.

Well you do get great views in most rooms but of course not all are of the river. No there is not a swimming pool but who wants to swim...you have the city to explore and you are right on the doorstep.
At the George Street exit you will find an old lift ...not in service though. This is of course a heritage building. Very interesting if you like antique lifts.

And this is the location of an excellent restaurant open for breakfast and dinner. The Lab Bar. There is a buffet option for breakfast now. And if you do not believe me about the food see Pedmars write up. Many of these names have historical significance too.

Now if you feel like a "bit of a flutter" there is an underground corridor to the Casino so you do not have to go out into the street. How exciting. And on this side more places to eat especially Marco Polo and Cafe 21.

Just to confuse you there is another section of the Hotel on the Casino side where the gamblers like to stay as it is close to the action. Some of the more expensive rooms there have an upstairs and a downstairs. Oh boy!

Hervey bay: Holiday Houses

by mjjnh

I stayed in a holiday House in Hervey Bay. They are all around Qld and Australia and available through many real estates. You only need a form of ID and credit card imprint and they hand you the keys. the places are amazing. Fully furnished, all cooking equipment provided the cost is around $300AUS + for seven days. You can get cheaper the further up the Qld coast you go. Most can be booked online through real estates like www.domain.com.au and sleep up to 8 .
If travelling with friends this can work out very cheap. My place was in Bideford St Torquay. I could see Fraser Island. There are holiday houses on fraser island also and they organise the transport if needed on the island. Google Fraser Island+holiday houses.

Royal Hotel, Roma: Worst Hotel in Queensland

by briofoz

Booked months prior to stay. Wanted 50% deposit up front. Place is disgusting. Carpet smelt, had large rips, repaired with gaffer tape. Communal ablutions were dirty, and floor was on a 10 degree list. Rowdy guests in TV room caused prop. to remove antenna and remote, so no one could use it. Lucky I found alternate accomm, as this place was the absolute pits.

Ferntree Rainforest Lodge: Resort turned into a Backpackers

by bijo69

The Ferntree is a slightly run down resort which was partly converted into a backpackers. The budget bungalows are 4 bed dorms now with ensuite bathrooms and aircon. They're all set in a huge tropical garden where you also have 2 pools and a garden restaurant serving lunch and dinner
The hostel/hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the Myall beach and the IGA store.

Tip Photo
Cairns Central YHA: Motel style Backpackers

by bijo69

Cairns Central YHA is a decent place to stay. Rooms are not too big, but there is enough space to store your luggage and they all have aircon. All the rooms are grouped around the open-air communal area with a small pool. The negative thing about it is, that it might get pretty loud during the night. Kitchen and bathrooms are clean and well maintained. There's a travel desk at the reception where you can arrange all kinds of tours.
