Brissie to Mackay road trip

by backpackerbaby

G'day,
will be driving from Brissie to Mackay soon, would like to stop somewhere in between - any suggestions of where to stop? People suggested TOWN of 1770 but it's a bit off bruce highway (yeah I've a bit time constraint). Any other places you'd recommend me to make stop-overs? I'm prepared to stay AT LEAST 1 night somewhere in between - but of course would like to check out some places as well (no need for going into the water... just check out some spots will do)

any recommendations would be appreciated.
thanks

cheers

I havn't been to 1770. My suggestion is Hervey Bay.
Cheers, Ann.

Gladstone and Bundaberg are well set up cities. Both have good hotel facilities as well. I really enjoy having dinner at the Yacht Club in Gladstone on a Friday night. It's right on the water and you can sit on the veranda and have a few drinks, then enjoy a great meal.

I deliberately made my driving detour to visit 1770. Mainly out of curiousity particularly with regard to Captain Cook's stopover there on May 23rd, 1770. A very cold day.
I believe that the Cooktown location is the only other place where he set foot on the mainland. Barring Botany Bay maybe.
It is 'out of the way' and that's how it lives, seemingly.
Mine was a quick visit. You've got to go there and then come back - you don't go through it to anywhere.
Quite a few K's all up.
To me it seemed a nicely quiet little location. Nothing much to speak of from the 'high level tourism' point of view. A few dwellings and a supply store but a nicely isolated 'away from it all' feel. This may not be a completely accuate 'sketching' but it would be close.
The beach swimming area is probably very good. It is Queensland !

Travel Tips for Mackay

Melba House

by lou31

For those interested in opera Melba House is a place to visit. It is the former home of Dame Nellie Melba who once lived in the pretty town of Marian outside Mackay.
Before she became an opera star she married Charles Armstrong who was the Marian Mill Manager. The marriage was short lived however due to Nellie heading off to Melbourne to persue her career. Life in a small country town was not her destiny.
They married in December 1892, moved to Marian where their son George was born late in 1893. Not long after Nellie moved away. She was remembered singing in church and social functions.
The house was moved from it's original place near the Mill to now sit on the banks of the Pioneer River.
