Radical Bay

by Openseas

Radical Bay is tucked neatly next door to Horseshoe Bay. Its a gorgeous beach which is excellent for swimming and snorkeling (out of stinger season). There is a divine walk across the headland to Balding Bay and onwards to Horseshoe Bay.

To reach Radical Bay you have to use a dirt road which is not suited to mokes.

Red Baron seaplanes

by Openseas

For those who are looking for a different type of adventure ! The Red Baron Seaplane is unique and has featured in some major movies. Its rumoured that Catherine Zeta Jones even flew in it !

It's the only open cock-pit plane in the world and takes 2 passengers only. I never had the opportunity to fly but it sure looked seriously cute !

Visit Maggie!

by ettiewyn

Magnetic Island is the perfect island escape off the Townsville shore. It has beautiful beaches, great rainforest walks and lookouts, nice villages with shops and cafés, swimming and watersports - and it holds the largest koala colony of Northern Australia, although I didn't see any!
A large part of the island is classified as National Park, so it really is a place of nature. Still, it is very touristy and can be quiet crowded. Also it is nothing like f.ex. the Whitsundays or Fraser Island, so I think it is not a MUST DO if you are short on time. But hey - it still is beautiful and I think it's absolutely worth a trip if you can manage, as I liked the atmosphere very much!
You can easily get to Maggie by ferry and once you are there, you can get around by bus, so it's a perfect destination for people who do not want to drive.

You might have already heard the story of how Magnetic Island was named, but here it is again: When James Cook discovered the island, his compass went crazy and that's how he named it.

Magnetic Island the one koala in the wild

by restless1010

"The Island of Koalas"

Magnetic was nice and peaceful. Not crowded and not too touristy. Seems like a lot of locals visit the island. The only bummer was the stingers in the ocean in Australia.
I got to swim in shark and crocodile infested waters in the ocean during a break from jetskiiing. I hiked for an hour for a great panoramic view at an old WWII fort..and spotted my one and only Koala in the wild. This island has the more koalas that people and has the most population in Australia of them. Best bet is to stay at Basebackers Hostels there and in New Zealand.
