Traveller's Haven: Not really a haven, but ok!

Traveller's Haven is one of three hostels in Mount Isa, and I stayed there although it did not have the best reviews, because the other hostels had even worse reviews.
I must say that the hostel is a bit run down - everything seemed to be very old. It is not a big hostel, but still the area is quite spacious.
The beds in my room were quite old and squeky, but the room was clean.
What you need to know is that you don't get a free sheet and blanket - this surprised me as it was the only Australian hostel where I ever experienced this. Somebody else gave me a spare blanket, I think otherwise you have to hire one.

There seemed to be quite a lot permanent people in the hostel, mostly Australian male workers, so don't be surprised. I never felt unsafe, though, and they were all very friendy.

I walked from the Greyhound station to the hostel as it is not too far, but there also seems to be pick-up - ask when you book. The manager seems a bit of a crazy person, but he is very nice and friendly and also let me watch the weather report on TV in his room with him because I was going to Cairns next and worried about cyclone Yasi. That was very nice, indeed.

Having said all this, including the negative things, I must still say that all in all I really liked my stay, mostly due to the very relaxed atmosphere and the cool people I met!

Roll out ya swag

Hi alot of us aussies use swags ,which are basically a tough canvas envolope with a light mattress sown into the lining so you can pretty well be sheltered from the elements its a great way to camp in which you dont need a tent you just roll it out hop inside and go to sleep under the stars, a word of warning when camping in the northern regions of the top end becareful not to camp to close to the rivers edge 1. there could be crocs or 2.you dont know how high the water may rise.Use common sense and never assume anything.
