What to see and where to stay in Hervey Bay Bundaberg area

by Natakea

Need recommendations on what to see and where to stay on 4 day drive ( later October), north from Noosa and then south to Brisbane airport. Are Bundaberg and 1770 feasible destinations? Thanks for any suggestions.

In Noosa Heads, try to visit the national park, that's worth it. I went to Bundaberg and there isn't much there, except for the brewery, which is a fun day trip. From Rockhampton or Yeppoon, you can get across to Great Keppel Island, the most southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. You could also try a day trip to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay. Seen that you've only got 4 days, you probably can't do it all, as it's a lot of travelling aswell. Good luck!

There is ONE thing you MUST do:)
That is a trip to Fraser Island, fantastic day trip or do an overnight trip.
You have to have a 4x4 to go on the Island. There are many 4x4 rental places.
They also rent out full camping gear, great camping places on the Idsland.
When you hire the 4x4 they will make you watch a video and give you orders as what to do and what not too, listen carefully as they will give information on tides etc and this is very important. The lakes on Fraser are wonderful as is the small amount of rain forest that still is there.

The drive from Noosa to Bundaberg is about 4 hours - and then its another 2ish hours up to 1770 - which is a great place to visit - and I think they are highly feasible goals. Haven't been to 1770 for a number of years, and it was in the process of developing at that time. Agnes Waters is also a lovely place to check out as - the most northern surf beach. You can access the bottom end of the Barrier Reef from these locations as well - there are daytrips to coral cays - Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliott Islands, which are at the sourthern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

If you drive up to 1770, please note that we always stop off at Miriam Vale for the best crab sandwhiches in the world!! 1770 IS mud crab country!

From Bundaberg, the coastal areas of Bargara and Mon Repos are worth checking out. The Mon Repos Turtle Rookery is well worth the effort at the right time of year - the turtle season runs through from November to March - but there might be some early activity at the end of October?

Have a great explore!

Just a PS to that - Queensland roads have just been given a very bad rap in the media - rated as unsatisfactory, which we sandgropers already know. Just an additional word, that the road from Gin Gin to Miriam Vale has always been particularly notorious for accidents. Make sure you feel fresh and take care on this stretch of road. Not meaning to alarm, but caution.

Also, if you do drive in to 1770, there is a short stretch of road (only about 2kms now) that is unsealed. Used to be quite a bit more.

Amend!! - change sandgropers to banana benders (my husband is from NSW!)

Travel Tips for Noosa Heads

Point Perry

by iandsmith

Point Perry sits at the southern extremity of Coolum Beach. Coolum Beach is a remnant of what beach suburbs in Australia used to be like in the '60s. Small shops, all on the main road, beach on the other side of the road with a grassy verge behind it. There were a lot of places like that. Now, on the Sunshine Coast, Coolum is the only place that approximates it.

This cute little building is stocked full of information & brochures on the area. Inside, the ladies on duty were knowledgable and very friendly and helpful. The centre also has old photos lining the walls showing the history of the area.
