Archipelago Studios

Very nice building, very close to beach and just off the main PD shopping road. Self catering. Nice pool but it does not get a lot of sun. There is a BBQ available to rent.

Unique Quality: Very clean, great staff.

Quick walk to the beach

We stayed here in 2002 for 4 nights. It was comfortable and reasonably priced. The manager was more than willing to help us book our dive trip and any other activities we were interested to try.

Unique Quality: Great location ... only steps from the beach and right at the end of the main street in Port Douglas.

More about Archipelago Studio Apartments Port Douglas

Just a 70 km (44 miles)...

by MVMT

Just a 70 km (44 miles) spectacular scenic drive from Cairns by sealed road skirting the Coral Sea, Port Douglas is totally unique. From the stunning sweep of its 4 Mile Beach to the wilderness of Dicksons Inlet, the world famous seaside village of Port Douglas has become a holiday mecca.

Sharing the same tropical latitude as Tahiti, 'Port' (as it is affectionately called by the locals) has a distinctive 'laid back' low rise tropical old world charm.
Despite its fame and popularity however, it still retains a close community atmosphere. Port Douglas is now regarded as the most popular base from which to explore the northern areas of the Great Barrier Reef and rainforest coast of Daintree and Cape Tribulation.

The nearest township to the Great Barrier Reef and steeped in history, it was this proximity that in the 1980's saw the north’s first Outer Barrier Reef cruises hasten the rebirth of this once sleepy fishing village, which in the last century rivalled Cairns as the region’s main centre and gateway to the North’s booming goldfields.

The Port Douglas hinterland extends to the sugar cane town of Mossman with its picturesque golf course, rainforest walking tracks and swimming in the cool mountain streams of the Mossman Gorge.

North of Mossman, between the long sandy beaches and mist capped mountains, you can find sugar, fruit, tea and coffee plantations, a rainforest theatre, walking tracks and mangrove board walks. An absolute paradise!!!

I'm keeping you on my list of "great little places"!

I'm a travel agent who booked my clients at By the Sea for 5 days in July. Working from Canada, by email, to book an appartment was a pleasure and so easy! The replies were prompt and informative and Wendy was wonderful with the whole arrangements!

What topped it off; my clients came back thrilled with their stay and how nice the staff was with them. They greatly enjoyed their whole Australian vacation, but By the Sea holds a very special place in their memories. Thank you Wendy!

Lovely Loft, Lovely Staff, Lovely Everything!

All of the staff here are very friendly and helpful, from the cleaners to the ladies in the office. They gave us great advise on local tours and eateries. The place is clean and well located (less than 1 min walk to the beach in one direction, and a bottle-o in the other!) Having read previous reviews, it looks like the new owners have worked hard, and succeeded in turning this little gem around. I would defiantly stay here again

Wonderful, central, quiet and affordable location very near 4-mile beach.

By the Sea is at the quiet end of the main street in Port Douglas, almost next to 4-mile beach and within very easy reach of the cafes, restaurants and shops. The apartment we stayed in was spacious and bright and quite private and very adequately accommodated our family of 5 adults. It would be hard to beat its location and it is affordable! The staff made us very welcome. I would definitely stay there again.

Home away from home

I arrived late in the day to Port Douglas to find a place to stay, and was a bit scared to go into By The Sea because it looked so nice, and as a solo traveller it looked like it would be too expensive. However, I was amazed by the welcome from Wendy - the very hands on owner of the property. She negotiated a fantastic rate for me to stay for 3 days and I was shown to a beautiful tropical style room with one double and 1 single beds. The view was poor, and the in room internet not cheap nor rapid but adequate. Those were really the only complaints I could have had. The location at the beach end of Macrossan is perfect - quiet, yet accessible by a 5 minute walk to everything the town has to offer. Wendy is knowledgable about local trips and happy to dish advice out about everything. Overall I had a really lovely time here.

All depends on the rate. Its 'good' if you get a good deal.

Stayed a week - its a great location just like it says its By the Sea - right next to the beach at the very end of the street leading to the beach. You will have a view of the sea but its filtered - we stayed in 2 separate apts whilst there for over a week and the views are not absolute beachfront. Filtered through trees and over the neighbouring low rise building. Nothing wrong with that you can hear the roar of the sea very very clearly but if you are expecting absolute beachfront (as our neighbour was!) then this isn't the place for you. As you are at the very end of the street its very quiet and the sea is clearly heard from your balcony which is lovely. We also had a RainForest room for a night during our stay and it was miserable, not recommended at all unless its very very cheap I believe we paid around 100AUD and its certainly not worth it. Your bathroom is right on the carpark and generally old and unpleasant. The rooms uptop with balcony are nice, large but again 'done up' rather than span new. We liked them well enough as we didn't pay over the odds but I imagine if you can book in advance elsewhere you would get a nicer apt for the same price. Its great being in town and on the beach however, easy walk for dinner etc. The new owners are making big efforts and are lovely to deal with and are very helpful. Generally would recommend (if you are not paying max quoted rate) but not rainforest rooms at all. (Their wireless internet is good value for the week!).

Good time in Port Douglas

by TripAdvisor Member RudolfJosef

We spent around 2 weeeks in Port Douglas and enjoyed the time very much. The hotel we had contributed to this feeling tremendously. Not only was the location perfect with 3 minutes to the beautiful beach and 5 mintutes to the center of town. The rooms had everythings we were looking for; a good layout with kitchen bathroom and spaceious living-/bedroom and a balcony. The atmoshpere was friendly and relaxed and whenever we wanted to go for some actvities like a trip to the reef, a visit to the reinforest or just a bycicle ride around town we got the advice and support to make evrything an activity to enjoy. We have to thank the owners and staff at By the Sea for a good time.

This property is under GREAT new management, so ignore any old posts. This is a great property situated a few yards from the best end of 4 Mile beach and right on the main street.

Note, there are no true beach-front properties on 4 mile beach. The local government have very sensibly not permitted anything more than palm trees on the beach itself. This is one of the few properties that can honestly offer you an ocean view (if you book the appropriate room).

The new owner and manager are just fantastic people. I had to rush my cousin to the airport during our stay and the owner even lent me her car. That's not just good service, that's someone of real character, so please support them with their new business venture and stay at this lovely little hotel.
