Get your accomodation PLUS transport!

The hostel is very close to the beach and also close to the centre. It has a nice and relaxed atmosphere, a bit like a rustic resort - all the room entrances open to the outside, so it is perfect to enjoy the tropical surroundings. When I stayed there, it was very clean and I liked the room a lot. The area is very spacious, so there is enough room for everybody. You can also enjoy the pool.
You can walk to the beach and centre within a few minutes, but there is also a bus stop right next to the building.
There is also a shop and a bar, but people need to be quiet after midnight.

Unique Quality: The great thing about Dougies Backpacker Resort is that they pick their guests up from Cairns every wednesday, friday and saturday - for free! So if you do your booking and advise them that you want to be picked up, they will pick you up at your hostel in Cairns. I found this great as I did not travel with a car and like this I did not need to bother about busses going to Port Douglas.
Of course they also drop you off again when you want to go back to Cairns.
They leave Port Douglas at about 08.30am and return to Cairns at about 10.30am.

Dougies

Hostel with plenty of camping too, a pool and a large bar.
Another one of those places where you have to pay a deposit for cutlery and plates.
The kitchens were large but got very messy and not all the hobs worked anyway.
Cost us AU$24 per night for a 4 bed dorm, luggage storage in the room it was kind of a complex of huts, not bad.
Large toilet blocks though not enough dry space in the showers.
Good clothes washing/drying facilities.
Reception has a large amount of information and will help you to book tours.
They also do a free pick up from Cairns on certain days.

Dougies..............................

I didn`t stay here but i spent loads and loads of my free time here using all of there facilities a bit cheeky, i know. It`s a very well looked after Hostel and you have the choice of camping or staying in the dorms.
Theres a swimming pool out the front which gets well used in the hot tropical weather and they have Internet,Sky Tv, own bar(with top notch juke box) and good cooking facilties. I well recomend it and the staff are great. They put on BBQ nights and theres a pool comp every tuesday night in which i won 2 times and lost twice in the final. Good stuff.

Free pick-up from Cairns!

Dougies is the only backpacker hostel I could find from the internet providing free pick-up from Cairns (city/airport), no matter how short you stay!!! This really attracted me, as I just planned to stay in Port Douglas for 1 night and this offer really saved me some money!!!

The coach ride was enjoyable as the driver acted as a tour guide, telling us about the history and stories about Port Douglas, plus recommending us special places to visit. On the way we drove pass a river, where we saw a croc lying on the embankment; in order to let everyone see the croc, he made a u-turn and drive back to the spot. How nice!!!
He also stopped at Rex Lookout to let everyone make some pics of the nice view.

At the check-in counter, you've to pay a deposit for a set of cutlery. This was new and interesting for me but I do think this system works.

Unfortunately I was the last one to check-in my room, I was forced to take a lower bunk bed. The beds were designed for kids, though I'm just 166cm in height, I found it difficult accomodating in my bed, I couldn't sit up straight talking with my room-mates at night.

Unique Quality: 1. Wonderful staff - very patient in answering my emails before my arrival.
2. Nice kitchen and eating area - great for meeting people.
3. Clean bathrooms.
4. Free pick-up from Cairns.
5. Lots of travel info.

Yet to be improved:
1. The beds are really too small.

A: "We have done both and and would suggest you do the Rail & Skyrail. These are not so dependent on the weather and are fantastic adventures. In the March is still iffy as..."
