More about Freestyle Resort Port Douglas
Stayed at the Freestyle Resort in April in a 2 bedroomed apartment overlooking the pool.Really enjoyed our stay the apartment was spotless and location was great.Annie and Jason were fabulous hosts and they were so helpful and knowledgeable nothing was too much trouble.Would definitely recommend the Freestyle.
We stayed at Freestyle Hotel for five nights in April . We had a fabulous stay. The rooms were spotless and Annie and Jason were so helpful . They booked all our trips and advised us on which day would be most suitable to go to the reef. [Checking the weather] Book Freestyle and get excelent value for money.
Trips we did , Skyrail.
Great but my husband did not like it as he does not like hights.
Great Barrier Reef
I could not put into words how fantastic it was.
White Water Rafting.
This is something everyone should do once in their lives. we are in our 50s and we were very nervous about doing it . But it was one of the best laughs we have ever had.
great service from hosts
I booked this accomodation based on previous reviews, the property is well maintained, handy to town and the beach (I recommend hiring a bike, then you are in town in a few minutes and it's a great way to get around> you can ride along the beach too which is great).
The pool area was lovely and good for little ones, we have a 20 month old toddler. The pool and the spa aren't heated at all so it's refreshing. The garden area around the pool is very attractive but not that spacious, with a good BBQ area.
We had a one bed apartment which was well stocked as far as kitchen gear goes and you can close off the bedroom from the living area. I thought the apartment was a little small with a bit too much furniture in it, but that may be personal taste. The furnishings are a bit cheesy but the general refurb is very tasteful esp timber plantation shutters.
I was a bit disappointed with the size of our apartment when compared to the price but that may just be port douglas prices and it seems that kind of town.
Anne was absolutely lovely and incredibly helpful and genuinely friendly, she is 5 star service and I think thats why they get such good reviews. A husband and wife team who run a tight ship and have high standards and provide great friendly, relaxed service and advice.
Nice Laid Back Place
The Freestyle is a small group of one and two bedroom apartments about 10 minutes walk from the main shopping area along Macrossan Street. My wife and I stayed in a one bedroom unit. It was small but sufficient for us. The good things were the balcony and the kitchen that opened to the lovely weather outside. The air conditioning was very effective in shielding the traffic noise from Davidson Street, which is busy day and night. On the down side, the bathroom was poorly designed and located in the middle of the unit. In addition there was no fan or veniliation in the bathroom or bedroom. The unit could have benefited from a chest of drawers where we could have unpacked our clothes. However, there was plenty of hanging storage. The salt water swimming pool was lovely and welcoming. The hosts were helpful and of great value in guiding us into town upon arrival. The clientele appeared mainly over 30 without kids.
As a general comment, particularly for oversees travellers to Australia, the star rating system used here is different from that Europe or North America. Port Douglas is a laid back and almost rustic fishing village by North American resort standards. Anyone expecting this local four star rating to equate to anything four star rated in Miami or Honolulu is going to be disappointed. Port Douglas is an expensive place to get to and to live in, and the $220/night room tariff reflects this. The quality of the accomodation is in line with local norms. I would certainly return.
A little bit of paradise
We had a fantastic week in Port Douglas at the end of August this year. Our accomodation at the Freestyle Resort was perfect.
The Manager Anne greeted us on our arrival with lots of basic information about Port Douglas & encouraged us to ask if we needed any guidence, she turned out to be a mine of information. My husband & I travelled with our two teenage daughters. Our appartment had two bedrooms each with its own spacious bathroom, which of course is a must with us girls, & a fully equipped kitchen & living area. Our balcony over looked the pool & internet access was available daily. We booked trips to the Barrier Reef with Calypso & The Daintree Rainforest, through Anne on Reception.
The Centre of Port Douglas is just a very pleasant 10 minute walk away & the four mile beach is just across the road from Freestyle.
We all wished we could have stayed longer in Port Douglas & would recommend Freestyle Resort for the perfect holiday accomodation.
Great advice for trips
We stayed at Freestyle for a week at the end of September. The acccomodation was fine altho the view from the balcony over the former cemetery wasn't what I would have chosen. But the real key to the 5 star rating was the host, Anne. She gave us all the information we needed to plan our week, booked our trips for us and kept us updated on weather checks - so we went to the Barrier Reef on a calm day!! We found the location of Freestyle was just right within a short walk of everything we needed. Having access to the Internet was great as we could keep in touch with family easily.
Port Douglas was a real holiday highlight for us, we were there without our children but there were plenty of families who appeared to be having an equally good time. We loved the rain forest safari, the Rainforest Habitat, the Barrier Reef and the local beach was lovely. The restaurants weren't cheap but we didnt have a bad meal and there was plenty of choice.
If we went back we would choose Freestyle again.
Stayed here for a week in mid October. As previous reviewers have mentioned Anne the manager is really helpful when wanting advice on where to go & how to get there. She is also prepared to book any trips for you which gives more time to enjoy the holiday. The accommodation is first class and very clean. Port Douglas is a quick 10 minute walk away and there is plenty of choice in restaurants - although not cheap. It should also be mentioned that there is only one bar that stays open after midnight. This is definitely a good place to stay if visiting the area
Loved the Freestyle. Had a great time
Loved the Freestyle. Stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment in October 2007. Great location with-in walking distance to everything in Port Douglas. You do not need a car there. Facility is very clean and well kept. Anne was very helpful with making arrangements for all transfers and activities in the area. We would ask Anne every day for a restaurant recomendation and she always did great. They put forth the extra efforts to make your stay wonderful.
We can't rave enough about Freestyle
We loved every minute of our week long stay at the Freestyle Resort. Anne and Jason were full of information about every conceivable activity. They always knew the best way to combine activities to have the best (and often cheapest) experience, so it's always worth asking their advice.
We stayed in a 1 bed apt on the top floor, which is great for two, but might get a bit cramped for 3-4. The place is spotless, and our room was serviced half way through our stay. The BBQ and pool areas were fabulous (and clean), and it was only a short walk into town, and to the beach.
Port Douglas is fabulous, but their appears to be no such thing as a cheap restaurant. Having said that, everywhere we went was well worth the price. We especially recommend The Jade Inn (chinese), Gone Bananas (Mediterasian), and 2 Fish, and Anne can of course recommend many more. The pubs and clubs do pretty great meals too. But it was great to be able to self-cater in the apartment too.
The Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas was well worth it, lot's of fabulous wildlife, we ended up being there a lot longer than we expected to. The breakfast with the birds was a little disconcerting, but a fabulous value breakfast at only $10pp for full hot buffet.
While there we did the Kuranda scenic train ride and Skyrail, which made for a lovely day and well worth the cost. The best part is the trip up and down. Kuranda village is full of craft and souvenir shops, many of which were pretty tacky, but some were good. We did Birdland and Butterfly World, which even though they were $15pp each was well worth it. Both only took about 1/2 hour each as they are small enclosures. Th other 3 hours we were up there was pretty much spent eating, there are some lovely cafes and restaurants.
We also drove up to Cape Tribulation for the day. Under Jason's advice we went early and successfully managed to avoid any crowds or having to queue for the ferry. Don't miss Myall Beach which is just beautiful. We had a fabulous lunch at the Dragonfly cafe which was lovely and relaxing. Our last stop was at the Daintree Discovery Centre. It was $25pp + $5 for the audio tour. It was a bit too hot so I don't think we got the full benefit, and I would probably recommend it as your first rainforest experience, otherwise it can get a bit repetitive after a week wondering around rainforests. The entry fee includes a really comprehensive booklet so I personally thought that the audio guide was wasted.
Amazing stay due to Anne! Great location as well!
When my mother informed me we were to stay in apartments on our trip to Port Douglas I was not happy. Upon arriving alothough, I was very wrong. We arrived after the windy road from Cairnes, and Anne greated us very kindly, showing us everything about our room and even recommending a local takeout pizza place for the first night. We had pizza delievered to our room as we all tried to overcome our jet lag.
Our room overlooked the pool and the balcony was very cozy. Through out my whole visit I felt like the only guest there! The apartments were a 10 minute walk from town, but the walk was peaceful and serene. The beach was nearby but due to jelly fish season we avoided it. The pool was great and I was able to acess the internet often. Anne was so kind, and let us feed the fish and pet her cat. We would usually go out to dinner but for breakfast and lunch we had our own groceries. The grocery store was a matter of a 8 minute walk and was very convienant! The two story apartment had a excellent bathroom and kitchen as well!
I highly enjoyed my stay here and highly recommend it!
p.s I miss you Anne!
