I would base myself in Port Douglas, or maybe down the road at Palm Cove and do some day trips to the reef, Daintree etc. Not sure where you will have been prior, but its a great spot for relaxing... and it is your honeymoon after all.

Port Douglas is wonderful and you will have a great time.
If you can hire a car and have a look around, I would highly recommend this.
Why stay in one place for 10 days when you are open ot other options.

My suggestions are to stay in Cairns for a 2 nights. First day do the rail up to Kuranda and then skyrail down. This is a fun thing to do.
Visit the Botanical Gardens, look around the Esplanade and explore the northern beaches.
Then you could head up to the Atherton Tablelands. This area has some wonderful little villages, lakes/waterfalls and scenic views are wonderful.
I highly recommend a place called Fur and Feathers to stay at.Here they have self contained small houses set among the rainforest area. These are just great. Spa in Bathroom and fire place if cold. You are supplied breakfast and at night and during the day the bird/animal life is great. You take your few supplies for meals....( who wants food on a honeymoon anyway!!!!!:))
Wonderful for a honeymoon.
You could stay here one or two nights....
Then from here you can drive through the hills, again great drive, to Port Douglas. Stay in Port for a few nights, from here you go out to the Reef. Great restaurants and the 4 Mile Beach is just wonderful.
From Port you can do a trip to Cape Tribulation, via Mossman Gorge ( the gorge is a must!!) Instead of coming back that day, spend a couple of nights up in the Daintree/Cape Trib area. This is just lovely. Great beach areas along the cost here.
( Don't swim in the rivers though...nasty crocs don't like that!!!:))
The you could head back to Port for a night before heading home...
I haven't counted the nights I have spent for you, but it;'s just an example.

You can get heaps and heaps of brochures when you arrive, plus maps etc.
I would book the first nights in Cairns and also at Fur and Feathers...then go by the seat of your pants and do bookings as you go...OR book ahead:)

I recommend the Redspot car hire at the Cairns airport, they do have all the other car hire names there as well.

By doing something like the above, you will see a great amount of this area.
You have a great trip:)

Travel Tips for Port Douglas

Bucket of Prawns and glass of Wine

by Anne12 about On the Inlet

This restaurant is overlooking the inlet. It has stunning views of the sunset.

Tropical open style Restaurant. Has a wonderful Seafood menu, Seafood platters, whole fish, Moreton Bay Bugs, Prawns and more.
They have a range of Wines, Cocktails and Beers.

Of an evening around 4.00pm until sunset it is a great place to sit and watch the sun go down while having the special of *Bucket of Prawns and Glass of Wine*$16.50 Aus
The Bucket has approx a dozen Prawns.
They also have other great snacks on the menu.
Happy hour daily from 3.30pm-5.30pm

You can watch the feeding of the huge Gropper at around 5.00pm....this is a tradition of the Inlet. I can't go past the Prawns, but I di have a cockail instead of the wine:)

A hot spot for getting married.

by backpackerbaby

St Mary's by the Sea is a lovely small white chapel located at the seaside near Dixie Street. According to the driver of my hostel, the chapel is very popular with 'to-be-married'-couples and you need to queue for at least 1 year if you wanna get married with your darling there.

WoW!

Trips to Cape Tribulation/Mossman Gorge/Daintree

by Anne12

There are a number tours you can do for these areas.
Along the main street of Port Douglas there are outlets that will book tours for you. There is also the Information Centre.
Before you decide to do a tour, think of the cost and then check out the car hire places. It might be less expensive to hire a car and do it yourself at your leisure.
I will be adding more info to my Mossman page and also Cape Trib page.
If you hire a car you can go as far as Capre Trib, then after this you need a 4x4.
Please don't go any further as it is dangerous and not worth the insurance bill.

Class in North Queensland

Port Douglas is a small chic town an hours drive from the City of Cairns. Sitting on the edge of the coral sea it is surrounded by rain forest.

Port Douglas Australia was once a tiny fishing village. Today Port Douglas still maintains the look and feel of a picturesque township with an old fashioned charm. Shady, tree lined streets with an extensive choice of restaurants, art galleries, boutique shops and a "fun filled" Sunday Market. Port Douglas still can boast of having no traffic lights, no parking meters and no plans to intention to install them.

Port Douglas is the centre of everything adventurous. There are over 100 tour operators in Port Douglas departing to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, Bloomfield Falls, Mossman Gorge, the Atherton Tablelands or Cooktown by boat, 4-wheel drive or air conditioned coach.
