Port Douglas Hotel? Best location and services?

by jackiehogan

greetings! any recommendations for a hotel that is close to everything (marina, beach, shops), that does not have golf or cater to families (we're a young couple) AND will enable us to give our brains a complete rest (i.e. they have high-end service oriented, will arrange our dive trips for us, clean our clothes and has good food on site. we don't care about TV and such).

We're arriving in a week!

We have been to Port Douglas seven or eight times and the last couple we have stayed at the Peninsula hotel. It has a great location (almost on the corner of Macrossan Street and across the road from the beach). The marina is about ten minutes walk away. It is a smallish upmarket boutique hotel. Breakfasts by the pool are included. They only have a small restaurant but there are heaps of others within five to ten minutes walk. I think they provide complimentary shuttle from Cairns airport. I hope you can afford to stay here and I hope they are not booked out. Make sure you go to the toad racing at the Iron Bar hotel - it's a hoot! Have a great holiday.

Travel Tips for Port Douglas

weather

by lynee

June to august is the dry season but this is also the tourist high season or peak season. Often accommodation etc charge more from June 1st to October 31st. (but definitely more expensive and crowded June to August.) I have been there in Sept/Oct and weather was nice and it wasn't too crowded. Of course it can still rain in the dry season, just not as much. here is a good link I found for you.

La Marina Ristorante Italiano - by the harbour

by sue_stone about La Marina Ristorante Italiano

Located by the harbour in the Marina Mirage complex is La Marina Ristorante Italiano. This large restaurant has some great tables by the harbour side for a relaxing alfresco meal. We have only ever been here for breakfast. My parents like to go to La Marina occasionally as it offers good value with its all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. There is a large buffet table with a full range of breakfast treats - breads, cereals, fruits, eggs, bacon, pancakes etc etc

Just keep going in to load up your plate until you can't eat anymore. Not glamorous, but it has to be done occasionally ; )

Semi Submersible Coral Viewing, what is that?

by Alain_Smeets

It's not really a submarine, but a vessel with looking windows to explore the corals. Well it give you the feeling that you are in a submarine though. You embark via a opening in the top and you sit on benches two by two short to each other.

And when we are fully loaded, they close the hatch and they take off for an viewing experience to another part of the Reef around the floating platform. This is for people who don't like to get wet and to give them also a snorkel experience without the salty water.

It's a nice alternative when you can't swim or don't want to snorkel. But why not do both, because this is free when you are on the Quicksilver platform.

Sunday Markets

by Anne12

Each Sunday morning there is a Market held in the Anzac park on the Inlet. This is at the North end of Port's main street. You can't miss it, follow the crowd:)

At the markets you can buy everything from fruit and veg to fashion. There are numerous things you can buy to take home for gifts.

One thing I do enjoy is having a neck and shoulder massage. The Chines massage is in the centre walk way of the market. It's about $10 for 15 minutes....great to relax you so you can continue searching for that special gift.

Port Douglas

"Beaches"

We drove as far North as Port Douglas, 73 km from Cairns on the beautiful, winding coastal road.
The town is surrounded by lush vegitation and pristine rain forest. It is also famed its Four Mile Beach

"Buildings"

Once a quiet village, Port Douglas is now a busy tourist centre, catering mostly for the top end of the market, with its many luxurious resorts and hotels.
The town still has many of its old buildings still intact though, like the pretty church on the foreshore.
