To travel or not to travel ?

by elenid77

HI everybody,

My husband and i are planning a week away with our 3 year old daughter at christmas time. We really want to come up to Port Douglas but I am so hesitant as i have read that it is cyclone season.. What was the last week of December like this year?? Have you had rainy days, or has the sky held up some beautiful blue skies?? Nothing worse than spending a whole lot of money and not be able to enjoy the summer days..

Thanks guys,
Eleni

The weather is unbeleivably unpredictable- it is FLOODING in Queensland, and has been for a few weeks.
I suggest that you try closer to the time.
Also= IF it is raining in PD it will still be warm- you could still go to the reef on a daytrip. It does not rain all day, even in the rainy season. Showers, then sunshine.

Thanks - i know it is terrible how extensive the flooding is in Qld .. You just never know what will happen with our weather patterns. Even is Sydney we seem to be having 3 seasons in the one day. It's crazy. We will take our chances because as you said, it is still warm and we will just be using the pool at the resort anyways... I just wanted to hear from some people in the forum who know more than us...

Have a great day
:)

Hello Eleni,we have had a lot of rain during this period--cyclone Tasha came through on Christmas day but usually we don't get a lot of rain until January/February.
This season we have not had many sunny days but lots of visitors enjoy it a bit cloudy because it is cooler. It gets very hot and humid and we do like our air-cons.
We never really know what the weather will be like and we prepare for cyclone conditions, but I have lived here for many years and Christmas is usually so hot and sticky us locals stay indoors as much as possible. We swim early morning and in the evening,so stay indoors during the heat of the day.

If you need to know more as the time drwas near, please contact me.

Cheers Dorrise

Good to hear (read!) from a local.

It surely is not the ideal season to travel there, in particular with such a small child if it is not used to living in the Tropics.

With the cyclones you never know when and how hard they will hit. I would surely revise my travel plans, as the best season for Port Douglas is Easter to early December.

Travel Tips for Port Douglas

Fishing on the Daintree River

by sue_stone

Back in 2002, during a stay in Port Douglas, Alex and I headed up to the Daintree River for a spot of fishing. My Dad came along too. We had pre-booked a fishing tour with a small group - just 4 paying customers, the skipper and his mate.

The tour started early one sunny morning, and as we whizzed along the river we really wished we had worn some warmer clothing - it was freezing! The captain tortured Alex by making him sit at the front of the boat and be a wind buffer for the rest of us!

Well, Alex soon got his own back by catching the biggest fish of the day!!

It was a fantastic experience to be fishing on the Daintree, and we were lucky enough to spot plenty of crocodiles as well.

The Daintree river is located about 40 minutes north of Port Douglas, via Mossman.

Four Mile Beach

by robertgaz

This is the premier beach of Port Douglas and from town you can walk to the beach in under 5 minutes and then continue to walk along the sandy beach for hours.

What I like about this beach is that you could spend all day there without a hint of any kind of development. The accommodation and houses are neatly hidden behind the many swaying palms.

Note: This beach has a net during the jellyfish stinger season so when the net is in place please only swim inside its protective barriers.

White water rafting.

We did the Barron River which is graded 2, but if you go after the Wet season is finishing, be prepared for a fast ride!!! I learned the hard way.
The day is fantastic, instructions are given clearly and the guides are great. All safety gear is included, but make sure you wear suitable clothes and shoes. You will get very wet!!!!!
A much faster ride is available on the Tully river.
A great day out!!!

Port Douglas, Northern Queensland

"A Relaxing Place to Unwind and Explore!"

Port Douglas was the first stop on our honeymoon and what a perfect place to spend it too!

Port Douglas is located just north of Cairns. It's quite touristy and can be expensive, but it's a relaxing place and a good base to explore Mossman Gorge, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and the Great Barrier Reef.

A: "We have done both and and would suggest you do the Rail & Skyrail. These are not so dependent on the weather and are fantastic adventures. In the March is still iffy as..."
