Don't bother staying here....

The hotel is beginning to get quite run down and is not worth the hefty price tag per night. We found that teh staff were neither very helpful, friendly or efficient - except for 2 staff on our second to last night.

The rooms decor is outdated and looks like it has come straight from an 80s day time soap.
I was also astonished to dinf that the bathroom did not have dual flush toilets - we are in one of the driest countries on the palnet and water is being wasted by the truckloads.

The food was standard and overpriced, not worthy of the stars they claim to have.

Unique Quality: There are acres of pools/lagoons which are lovely.

Old but confident

Arriving to the grounds of the Sheraton Mirage, visitors are treated with a lush tropical landscape that manages to set the mood for a great vacation. The hotel itself is extremely large and very easy to get lost in. Keep in mind that the rooms are in need of an upgrade, but but the location is so amazing that you will spend very little time in your room. I would stay here if you are looking for a hotel that offers exceptional service, large number of salt water pools/lagoons, and incredible beach front access.

Unique Quality: The pools and lagoons at the Mirage are outstanding they have so many that you can often find one to be alone in if you want. The hotel is also the first resort in Port Douglas so it has a higher reputation that surrounding hotels. Although the rooms are outdated the staff makes up for it with a great amount of friendliness.

Cannot wait until we return.

We were firstly apprehensive about staying here due to all the bad reviews on T/A but we love the Sheraton Mirage on the Gold Coast, so we decided to give it a go. We are also gold members of Starwood, so getting an upgrade and the little extra’s as a member was important to us.

Our room 5116 was on the ground floor overlooking one of the swimming pools, so basically, we could walk out our door and hop into the pool. Due to being Starwood members we had an privilege members room, which was very spacious with a king size bed, TV, couch, tea and coffee facilities and a welcoming bottle of champs.

The bathroom was very spacious with a spa and overhead shower with an enormous vanity suite. Bathrobes and fluffy towels were also supplied. Yes, the rooms do need an update and refurbishment but to me they were fine, and I have stayed at many 5 star establishments around the world.

What is the most important thing here is the awesome swimming pools and the outdoor facilities which are on offer. There are 14 swimming pools in this resort, some are freshwater and the others are salt water. My hubby had fun making sure he swam in every one, and if you had kids on board, this hotel would be absolutely fantastic for them.

The hotel is situated on the waterfront on 130 hectare of land, which also incorporates an 18 hole golf course. We only had a snack at the pool and breakfast in the hotel and dined in Port for the evenings, only because we wanted to be in with the action. It’s approx a 5 minute drive by car, there is a shuttle bus which operates from the hotel if you have no private transport.

Unique Quality: Overall, we loved our stay here and we only wished it was winter, as we could have had both worlds the ocean to swim in and the pools. We are definitely coming back and if you can get over the resort not having the 5 star trimmings in your room, then this hotel is perfect for a stay in Port Douglas.

We checked out all the other hotels, and quite frankly, we thought the Mirage to be the best in town. I have given this resort a 5 star for its fantastic position on the ocean and its truly enormous and fabulous swimming pools. The staff were also incredibly friendly, efficient and helpful, a credit to this establishment.

P.S. Its one hour drive from the Airport.

Nice hotel grounds, but out-of-date rooms

The guidebooks we used (Fodor's, Frommer's) rated this resort hotel highly and described it as one of the best properties in Port Douglas. Since my wife and I had enough Starwood points to book a free three night stay here, we went with it.

This hotel is overrated.

The furniture and carpeting in the rooms look dated (circa 1980s), and our shower didn't work until the last night of our stay. We would get either scalding hot water or freezing cold water, and there was no way to adjust. The hotel sent someone to look at things twice before the problem was fixed. It later turned out that other guests that we ran into were experiencing the same water issues (and, incidentally, also shared our impression of room decor).

One of the couples that we befriended had ordered room service and did not have much to say about the food either. Finally, the resort is too far from where most of the dining and shopping is located, which means that you have to take shuttles to get there. The shuttles are nice and available 24hrs, but if your thing is to be in the middle of things, this hotel won't satisfy.

On the positive, the resort is surrounded by five acres of beautiful, swimmable lagoons, which are a pleasure to soak in at any time of the day. The tour desk is also well staffed by professional, courteous, and extremely helpful and knowledgeable agents.

In my opinion, if you're paying to stay here, you are better off looking for another place. If you have enough Starwood points to book a free night ... I'd still look around before settling on this hotel.

Unique Quality: Beautiful artificial, swimmable lagoons easily accessed from any room.

by Robachu1 about Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas

We only stayed four nights but they were very nice nights...and days. The hotel rooms were large and comfortable. Ours was on the first floor (lagoon level) which meant that we had a patio which overlooked one of the bright blue swimming pool lagoons.
The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful, as good if not better than any other hotel in which I've stayed. The most unique thing has to be the lagoon pool. They are huge and allow for almost completely private use of the swimming area. In room internet access via the television was another plus.

Not aging gracefully

Our July holiday at the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas was the 5th time we have stayed there. Sad to say, the place is looking really shabby, the lagoons need a good coat of paint, the gardens look scrubby in many areas away from the main building, and the food in the buffet restaurant is decidedly ordinary. ''Il Pescatore'' , the fine dining restaurant, proved to be a better option, but the staff spent more time coaxing in a couple of diners [dressed in shorts and baseball cap] than attending to the guests who had made bookings and were sitting at the table waiting for service. The female maitre'd spent 20 minutes going through the menu with this ill-prepared couple., while we waited for our wine to be poured. The rooms are tired. The reception desk had ''run out" of 15 minute internet connection forms and forced us to pay twice the price for 30 minutes when all we required was about 5 mins. At $10 a day this is a thinly disguised rip-off. We subsquently stayed at Thala Beach Resort, about two kilometres along the road, where internet access [including printing] is completely free. A small detail perhaps, but the Sheraton needs to get real.

A perfect getaway from it all!

I stayed at the sheraton mirage during off peak in December 2005, alone for a break away from everything. Fabulous! I have stayed at a number of 4-5 star properties in the area, and found this property far exceeded them all. The room was spacious and well kept. The staff welcoming and happy to attend to any problem. The food was of a good standard, with a well priced seafood buffet with high priced items included such as bugs and yabbies. Skip the breakfast, much better options if you take a stroll along the beach into town (about 20 mins)such as mango jam. The pools, despite some reviews, are clean and well maintained, and of a glorious temperature. This is a peaceful place to get away from everything!! Worth the rates charged, as the facilities exceed everything else offered in the region!

Beautiful lagoon hotel

by TripAdvisor Member BarnesTraveller

The hotel was in a perfect position to enjoy the many sights of the area - snorkelling, sailing, croc farms, rainforest etc. However the hotel rests upon being the only 5* in Port Douglas. Pools were lovely but staff poorly trained and rooms tired. Food better in town. Children loved it. Hotel rooms are central for families; the villas can be a hike for young children although there is a shuttle.

A beautiful hotel in tranquil setting.

The Sheraton Mirage is a lovely hotel and has been in the past even more so !
At present, although very luxurious, it is in need of refurbishment. The cheerful chap on reception said they were awaiting approval to spend 30 million Australian dollars on the establishment (i.e. approx 13 million pounds).
The areas that are badly in need of repair are the surrounding lagoons as all the paint is chipped away making the lagoons look dirty when they actually are not.
Money will have to be spent on all the guest rooms as they are now very dated i.e. sallmon pink bathroom suites, tired carpets and chipped paint etc. We stayed in the most expensive room before you paid for a villa and were surprised that it had been left to look like this - goodness knows what the cheaper, garden view, rooms were like. Our bedroom was comfortable and well attended, I am only pointing out the things I think should be addressed when you are being charged £350+ per night just for the room.
However, all that aside we had a good holiday there and the lobby was in excellent condition. The car valet is free at least !
The restaurants are superb and I recommend "Il Pescatore" - delicious food, we dined there on at least three occasions.
There is a super little bakery within the hotel grounds where you can have a very cheap and delicious breakfast, we did this every morning not just because of how cheap it was we actually found it nicer than a big buffet breakfast. We became hooked on the raisin bread they toasted for us each morning !
The staff were very pleasant and the hotel is quite wonderful to look at it just needs a bit of money spent on it which I think they are aware of and we are sure will be done in the next year.

Accomodation for our Honeymoon in Port Douglas

by Vikika

Hello everyone!!

My future husband and I will be spending our honeymoon in Australia and the first 4 nights we´ll be in Port Douglas. We want to do some diving, shopping, dining, sightseeing... and we´ve been told Port Douglas is one of the best towns in Australia.

We would like some help/advises regarding accomodation. We would like something nice and well located. We don´t really care about luxury but it´s our honeymoon so we would love something special.

Any ideas anyone? we are looking for hotels, not apartments.
thank you alL!

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.
We have been to Port Douglas a few times- and you are correct. In my opinion, the best town in Australia. It really has everything- great atmosphere, beach, proximity to the outer reef, Rainforest and lovely walking tracks. Good restuarants and boutique shopping in McCrossan Street.
There are also very many hotels, motels and resorts available.
On our last visit, we went as a huge family group, so we rented a villa (there were 12 of us) but I did have a good look at some resorts and hotels for future reference. The Sheraton Mirage impressed me most; Here is what the website says, and it is spot-on:

***Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort is situated directly on Four Mile Beach between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Nestled amidst 130 hectares of tropical landscaped gardens, a championship 18-hole golf course, and two hectares of magnificent swimmable saltwater lagoons, you will experience the best of resort living. Allow the fine cuisine from our three award-winning restaurants to tempt you. Or simply relax by one of our stunning lagoons.***

Another good one was Sea Temple Resort, which also has an excellent Golf Course.

There are daily trips to the reef from Port Douglas, we enjoyed the Quicksilver tour. It is an all-day trip, offers scuba and snorkeling ops. Good food, teas, snacks and all snorkeling equipment & suits are provided free.Cost A$110.00 pp.
I am not sure when you intend being in Port Douglas, maybe you should check on seasonal temps and rainfall.......
