Transit Centre Backpackers: Backpackers

Service at the desk when we checked in was a bit slow, and we had to fill in 2 almost idential reservartion forms for the one joint room, which was a little annoying (I think they may employ other backpackers as staff too and be training some).
Being part of a transit centre, I hadn't expected this place to be much more than a place to crash at the end of an exhausting day, but it was really good as a backpackers in its own right and I'd stay there again.

Unique Quality: Funky bright coloured rooms, good cond bathrooms with plenty of showers (sep womens and mens rooms)
Huge 2 very spotlessly clean and new looking dining areas, views from balcony of dining room over Townsville to boats at harbour. New cond kitchen, all also very clean.
The only backpackers I've been in with a jacuzzi in the dining area!
Large tv room with brand new looking couches.
Great info avail downstairs at reception, and Magnetic Isl backpackers & trip bookings done free of charge (as at most places except official booking offices, we found).
Free courtesy bus leaves several times a day from the Transit Centre/Backpackers to the Magnetic Island ferry terminal. Very handy.
Pub on each corner, restaurant in Transit Cente (and tour booking office), strip of coffee bars around the corner. Only 5 mins walk across river bridge to Mall.
$17 per night for dorm rooms is a very good price.
