Here's another link - http://www.adhills.com.au/tourism/towns/hahndorf/

The German museum on the main street is well worth a visit, so too is the hotel and if you want a tasty treat, try their bratwurst sausage meal - warning; it is not for those watching their weight.

Travel Tips for Adelaide

St Peters Cathedral

by hennanights

This stunning church, built in the 1900s, is on the corner of King William Road and Pennington Terrace, North Adelaide. It was modeled on the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. The spires of the cathedral are 51 metres high. There are fine stain-glass windows throughout depicting Australian scenes as well as stories from the bible. It is one of few churches left that uses bell ringers. People come from all over the world to learn to do this. It is a beautiful sound. I especially like hearing them when and couple have just married. The church also boasts one of Australia's leading choirs.
You can take tours of the Cathedral every Sunday at 2pm. 27 King William Road, North Adelaide SA 5006

Tipping: Taxi drivers

by Helium_Teapot

I have had a few friends who drive taxis in Adelaide and a lot of them found it hard work and only really made money on the occasional tip.

Although tipping in Adelaide is not expected, I almost always tip taxi drivers. I normally either just let them keep change (if not a huge amount) or tip about a dollar or whatever falls out my coin purse (for a 5 or 6km journey). When I lived further out of town the I'd tip a few dollars.

Get away from it all.

Last year my girlfriend and I stayed at the Ridgetop Retreat in Deep Creek conservation Park, about 1 and 1/2 hours drive south of Adelaide. The place is really well designed to be energy efficient, warm in winter and cool in summer. The three retreats are made mostly of recycled materials, and glass facing the sun to trap the heat during the day. It was the middle of winter when we went, and the place was very warm inside (Deep Creek can get very cold in winter). One of the days we went for a hike around the cliffs that look on to Kangaroo Island, getting very wet, and risking life and limb climbing 'cliffs' we got this photo. On May 16,. it will be on the ABC news weather.

Hahndorf

by keeweechic

Hahndorf is the most visited hills town and one of the earliest settlements founded by an industrious group of German Lutherans. Hahndorf, which is 28 km east of Adelaide is the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia and it has managed to retain its nineteenth century Germanic identity with many buildings restored for local use.

You can buy modern and traditional handcrafted arts and crafts, and sample German breads and meats. An unusual attraction is the Hahndorf Antique Clock Museum, the most unique collection of its kind in Australia and features the world's largest cuckoo clock. There is also a German Folk Museum, Model Train Land and a German-style restaurant in the Old Mill which was originally a flour mill built in the 1850s.

Location: 28 km east of Adelaide
