One of Australia's best hostels

Indeed, this hostel was voted the best hostel in Australia by a German travel website that has hundreds of members. I cannot confirm that it is the very best, but it was very good indeed and I really recommend the place if you are staying in Adelaide - or its partner hostel Adelaide Backpackers Inn that is just across the road. Both are managed by a family, mostly by the father, and he is one of the best hostel managers I have met. Always very friendly and helpful! Because of him coming back to the hostels after a tour really was like coming home again.

Hostel 109 is very pretty and furnished more like a hotel. I stayed in a two bed dorm and this was very, very small - in fact there was hardly a place to put my backpack - but I was ok with that because it was nice to stay in a double room and not to be with three or more people.

The hostel is very clean, the interior is very nice and modern, and there are free internet pcs!

Unique Quality: * close to the city centre (only a short walk from Victoria Square
* very clean, nice and modern interior
* very friendly manager
* feels more like a hotel than a hostel (at least in the double room)

Camper Hire

by DG1272

We're looking to self drive a camper van from Adelaide to Pert via the southern coast. Any suggestions as to hire companies?

Re: Camper Hire

by sirgaw

One company that has offices all over Australia is Britz - http://www.britz.com.au/cheap-campervan-hire?247SEM I have not rented a van from them or anyone else, but have heard good reports about them. From what I've seen on the roads, their vans look well maintained and modern.

Your cheapest option would be to take a look at this page. This works on a non-profit/fun basis and the concept utilises "backloading" rates within the Campervan industry. The desto and direction you are travelling is commonly available on short notice at between $1 - $50/day plus the normal expenses. I have noticed that they are usually the 6 berth vehicles. If the current availability is not up to date, just ask (I think it is updated every Monday)
Good luck :)

There are many that you can google Britz, Maui, Kia, Cheapa etc but there prices are quite high. If you can be flexible on short notice it is best to negotiate a "backload" where the price is much cheaper but still a reasonable time to get from one point to another. The hire rate is generally less than $50/day this way (even as low as a "token" $1/day on very short notice). There are often larger 6 berth vehicles at these rates that would be suitable for your plans.

Travel Tips for Adelaide

Adelaide, otherwise labelled...

by scharneckk

Adelaide, otherwise labelled the 'City of Churches' is a very quiet little town.

There are some pretty gardens and parks. Some of the Churches are pretty to look at however I think the prettier churches are in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and these are the Big Cathedrals!

Welcome to Kaurna Land

by pchamlis

The Kaurna (which is pronounced GAR-na) people are the traditional owners and custodians of the Adelaide plalins. As is the case throughout Australia, the aboriginal past is not far beneath the surface of everyday life. The original peoples of the continent have a presence and influence on the culture and history of this great land.

Adelaide is a perfect place to learn more about the Kaurna people and the Australian aboriginal people(s). Among the better places to examine the culture of these peoples is the South Australia Museum, over on North Terrace.

a guide to the bay (clubs'n'pubs)

by city-bay-living

Glenelg goes off on a fri/saturday night.

head to the pier... (turn right at the jetty and keep walking) for the classy/funk/club/restraunt hub... or just stick to good old jetty rd to witness many-a-drunken antic. The Best pubs are the dubin, jetty bar and the backpackers... although the grand is pretty fab before dark, after sunset, the grand turns into the most popular club... but the jetty bar and the backpackers are worth a go.

P.S. Never ever ever ever come in winter... it's v. cold and rather boring.

P.P.S. new years is crazy- plenty of ferals (see pic.) but plenty of fun.

Onkaparinga Estuary

by Diceman_

Onkaparinga Estuary is located between Port Noarlunga and Old Noarlunga, located within Onkaparinga River Recreation Park. The "Pingle Farm track" gives you an idea of what the area was like before it became urban sprawl. There is an abandoned farm property built in 1862, given that most of it is in ruins I am surprised to learn that it was occupied until the 1970's.
The track forms a loop and you can choose a short or a longer route depending on the time available and physical condition. It is mostly level ground with well defined paths.
The track can be started from Commercial Road or Sauerbiers Road in the suburb of Seaford Meadows.

Escape to Bombay

by lovinoz about The Bombay Bicycle Club

Rikki Tikki Tavi
Polished floor boards, exposed bluestone walls, an open fire, state of the art music video juke box system, tigers, elephants, cobras and of course bikes! The Rikki Tikki Tavi Bar is a great place to meet up with friends and when we were there this past Saturday night, the band Atomic Voodoo was playing some great rock and top 40 hits! With 100 international beers by the bottle and nine beers on tap you can watch staff at work in the exposed, fully operational keg room. This place is great for a night out! Next time we'll go for dinner at their Gungadins Restaurant.

Taj Gaming Room
This is taking a pokie room to a new level! Luxurious couches, three lounge areas, a brass horse, timber elephants and wooden carvings. You have to check this out! Neat casual ~ no thongs etc
