Tasting Australia - Food & Wine Festival
by tigerjapan
Tasting Australia is a unique festival, an opportunity for food and drink professionals, the world’s food, drink and travel media, and the public to enjoy the best that South Australia and the nation at large has to offer in produce, food products, wines and beers, hospitality and tourism. Held every two years in Adelaide, Tasting Australia also provides a showcase for the world’s top culinary talents. The countdown has begun to the next event, taking place from October 21 to 30, 2005.

During the allergy season, the Adelaide Plains has a quite high pollen count level. The projected pollen count will be given on the nightly news report during the allergy season (spring/ summer) Mozzie repellant if you're going anywhere near the rivers or the mangroves. During summer at dusk, if you aren't protected, they'll carry you away.
30+ suncream is a must for anyone due to the harsh and powerful sun, especially during summer. The local news forecasts will give nightly reports on expected UV ratings for the next day.
Onkaparinga National Park
by Diceman_
Onkaparinga National Park, about 35km directly south of the city centre is a good park for adventurous exploration, with a number of walking trails of varying quality found at various access points. A map of the park found at the "main" entrances is quite useful. One problem with some trails is overgrowth, due to what must be a lack of park management.
The greenery is at its best in Winter and Spring, before the Kangaroo Grass has turned brown in anticipation of the dry summer.
A large part the central area of the park was subject to a bushfire in late December 2006 (due to arson).
For people visiting the park the first time, my recommendation is:
1. Enter Piggot Range Road, Onkaparinga Hills, from Coxs Hill Road. The first entrance encountered with a dirt carpark and pedestrian gate leads to several trails. A good sense of direction is advised.
2. Alternatively, further down the road there is a larger carpark. Walk down a gravel road and turn left at a dirt path where there are signs pointing to a lookout and Sundews trail. Follow this path until encountering a wooden platform.

The Ghan, Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin
by pchamlis
All three of Australia's great interstate trains (The Ghan, The Overland and The Indian-Pacific) service Adelaide. The Ghan crosses Oz, on a north-south axis, running from Adelaide (on the Great Southern Ocean) to Darwin (on the Indian Ocean).
The Ghan's most appropriate motto is "The legendary journey through the heart of Australia".
The Ghan runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs twice a week, and one of those times, it goes on north to Darwin. So from Alice Springs, you have two opportunities per week to travel to/from Adelaide, and one to travel to/from Darwin.
If you have the time and the knack for an adventure, I seriously suggest that you take the Ghan either into or out of Adelaide.
If you're traveling in first class (Gold Kangaroo) and you make advance booking, you can bring your automobile along on the train's motorail for a reasonable cost...something like A$100.
For all you train lovers, here are a few Ghan facts, courtesy of "Platform Magazine", published by the Great Southern Railway Company of Australia...
Adelaide to Alice, one night, 1559 km
Alice to Darwin, one night, 1420 km
Average length of train, 403 meters, 15 passenger cars + locomotive + motorail
Average speed of the Ghan 85 km/hr
Max speed of the Ghan 115 km/hr
Weight of the train is 735 tons. (It gets heavier after dinner. : )
The basic routing of the train, starting with Adelaide and continuing to Darwin is as follows:
Adelaide - Coonamia - Port Germein - Port Augusta - Tent Hill - Pimba - Kingoonya - Coondambo - Tarcoola - Manguri (near Coober Pedy) - Kulgera - The Iron Man - Finke River - ALICE SPRINGS - Tennant Creek - Katherine - Pine Creek - Adelaide River (a long way FROM Adelaide, mind you...) - Darwin
