Hindley St.
by dlandt
Hindley is a street near the universities that has quite a few restaurants and shops. In general it seems to be the center of intellectual and nightlife in the city. If you wonder what pokies are, they are a low level gambling device similar to punchcards. Beyond that, there are various shops catering to different interests, incense, spices, etc. There is too much of an abundance of food here to give you a good description of each one. I spent a day wandering the bookstores without any knowledge of whether or not they are chains or local.
National War Memorial - The Spirit of Sacrifice
by hennanights
Adelaide's war memorial, on North Terrace, to commemorate those that died in the two world wars and other later ones. It was unveiled to the public in 1931. 75,000 turned out for the event. Made from granite, bronze and white marble, inside a crypt which bears the names of 5511 men who fell. Outside the bronze figures that kneel before the spirit of duty are a civilian farmer, a student and young girl. They are symbols of the spirit of everyday people who laid down their lives for their country. The other side there is the spirit of womanhood who bravely bared the loss her sons and husbands for the greater good. The bronze lions head fountain represents the continuous memory of those lost.
Gracious North Adelaide
by SPW
The Adelaide City Council has published a number of brochures for self guided walking tours of the city and surrounds. these are available at the Tourist Information booth in Rundle Mall or can be downloaded from:
http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/discover/visitor/walks_activities_trails.htm
During our walk around North Adelaide we came across many mansions, the Anglican Cathedral of St Peter, old hotels and shops and working men's cottages. A little of this is shown in the Travelogue.
Shop shop shop
by worm_star about Rundle Mall
This 'mall' is located along the Rundle Street. Various stores are lined up along this street. Great atmosphere. Pretty crowded with both locals and tourist ..but it's cool. There're heaps of stores there- from music stores to various clothes shops to shoe shops to gift/souvenir shops to.... anything! It depends, if you're planning to REALLY shop... You could spend to up to AUS$500. But i think it's average of AUS$100 - AUS$200.
Club Paradise in Adelaide
by PetStarr about Minke Bar
Minke is about as close to club perfection as you can get in Adelaide. Having said that, it does have its off nights (but doesn't everywhere?). Multi levels of music cater to most people's tastes, with a heavy focus on funk and hip hop on the ground floor and techno, trance and d&b on the top floor (also called Skylab). One door price (usually about $10, more expensive than most clubs) will get you into both levels. Stays open until about 5-6am on Fri/Sat. No particular dress code, but avoid thongs and shorts and touristy clothes.
