by linlorli

Does anyone know which car rental companies allow you to take the car to Kangaroo Island?

Are you leaving it there?

If not most will allow it.

Herta and Budget both have hire cars available on the island
Europcar let you hire cars to take to KI but i think don't cover your ferry trip
Thrifty allows you to hire cars to take over
Avis will not allow you to take a mainland car to KI

Travel Tips for Kangaroo Island

Native Species

by Diceman_

One thing about Kangaroo Island I found interesting was that the insects were different from the mainland. The main insect at the place I stayed at in Penneshaw was probably filling the evolutionary niche of the cockroach (see picture). There were beetles that from the top looked like a oval upturned leaf, and at Cape Gantheume Wilderness Protection Area a christmas-beetle coloured variety of fly.

There were weeds which smelled like burning rubber if disturbed, and ones which grow a few meters high if left alone (see picture).

Animals that aren't unique to Kangaroo Island but are uncommon elsewhere in the region are Wallabies, Penguins, Echidnas, Sea Lions and Platypus.

Windbreakers are a must

by kyoub

If you bring your own car over on the ferry, you can bring anything you want.
If you are walking bring something easy to carry on and off the boat. Wind breaker by kyoub

It is very windy out on the island so you will need a wind breaker. It may not be as warm as you expect either. I needed sweaters instead of light weight clothing when I was there. Be sure to check the temperature and take in the fact that the wind makes it seem colder than it sounds. Most supplies are available in Penneshaw Take a lot of film or a very large memory stick.
You will want many pictures of this island. You can find wine of every age and color. From cheap to very expensive.
There was only one place to get on the internet and that was in Penneshaw.

On the beach

by CliffClaven

Want to get away from it all? Kangaroo Island has plenty of deserted beaches if you fancy a lonely stroll. Mind you, if you happen to stroll along a beach on the south of the island, with the rain and wind blowing straight from Antarctica, you'll soon realise why it's deserted. If you want a tan, it's better to head for Queensland.

Lighthouse

by kyoub

The 1852 Cpae Willoughby Lighthouse, is 28km from Penneshaw
It is a nice drive and you will see rolling hills and many sheep on the way there.
It is the state's oldest lighthouse.
There are guided tours

Paul's Place

Here you can pet, hold and feed dozens of native Australian animals including koals, kagaroos, emus and many more. They also have farm animals and a sheep shearing demonstration. The animal are found orphans who now have a new home. Great Place!! Bring plenty of film!!
