Umpherston cave/sinkhole
by Kate-Me
Umpherston isn't really a cave - it's a mostly dry sink hole, in which a garden has been planted in the bottom, but it is a cavern and does have rock overhangs. Umpherston is always one of the places in Mt Gambier which gives me the fondest memories - at night it's for the possums, by turns shy, yet inquisitive, and some are downright bold and would climb up your leg if you don't give them something to eat fast enough.
And in daytime, I enjoy going there to admire the gardens, so pretty that it's no wonder couples often get married down there. Very picturesque for photos.
Shoes
by Kate-Me
Bring a good pair of walking shoes with you to Mt Gambier, especially if you plan on going underground in the caves. Also, there are plenty of walks to take. Anything else you need you can buy in town. There are 2 supermarkets, plus a shopping centre with department stores and plenty of shops in the main street You should be able to buy any film etc that you need in town. It's a great place to camp, especially at the nice caravan parks, so bring your tent and camping gear if you like camping.
Fishing
by alisonr
Around Mt Gambier there are a number of places to tempt the keen fisher person.
The Glenelg River at nelson is a great spot, for semi-freshwater fish. The Port Mac area to the south is the crayfish capital of Australia, and lots of other sorts of fishies can be caught here too.
There are a few tourist boats but they are very expensive.
Go to Donovans landing on the river, drive towards Nelson and turn off at the signs. Drop your line here with some cockles on it, and catch yourself some brim. Please be aware that size and bag limits apply and in VIC you will need a licence if you fish anywhere else but Donovans on this river.
Port Mac - drive up Bay Road, past the blue lake, keep going till you hit the sea. The jetty can get a bit cool, even after hot days, so take your parker and jumper. The locals are friendly and will help you out.
Light house
by alisonr
The light house at Port Mac is old and good for a look. Travel away from the town towards the west and take the windy road. You will find it. There are also a lot of really beatiful look out spots along here, the second to last one has acess to a beach and I took some wedding photos here once. Really nice. But if it is a really windy day give it a miss. (all days are windy)
Churches
by alisonr
For a town of our size, which isn't very big, Christianity is very well catered for, with most significant sectors represented. St Pauls is the major Catholic Church (not the only one) but is the biggest in the town. During the busy wedding season there can be up to 4 a day here.
