The park is by the Derwent river at Berriedale. Cost : AUS $7 p.p. per night for unpowered site. There aren’t many caravan parks in Hobart, strangely, and all are out of town. There’s another one at Sandy Bay which we checked out, but it’s in a town setting, a long way from the water, and more expensive.
The views were great (2nd only to Bay of Fires). We were within a caravan campground, sure, but that didn't stop us from finding a great spacious camping spot only 6 feet from the edge of the river and a 2 feet drop into the river itself (can't get much closer than that!) There were all kinds of birds around us, from seagulls, ducks, black swans, shearwaters and other birds whose names I don't know. And we were right in the middle of them. A very nice place to stay. | | | | The Pickled Frog: Nah.... | Satisfaction: | | | | |
Staying at the Pickled Frog for 4 nights was definitely an experience (good or bad? Keep reading and make your judgement.) As recommended by LP, I booked in 4 nights in a 4-bed mixed dorm right before Chrissie. The website was very fancy but one strange thing: there were no pictures of the rooms. Anyway, I thought it couldn't be very bad as in general Aussie hostels are up to a certain standard based on my experience. When I arrived, I was a bit shocked - 'cos the exterior wasn't that promising. When I checked in, the counter staff (a young guy, not v friendly) said that my room wasn't cleaned up yet! Hey, I already told you my arrival time in my booking. Why was it not ready? Anyway, I didn't say a word. I then went to my room to leave my backpack - what the?! I have never seen such a small dorm room!!!!! The room was a very narrow rectangle with 2 bunk beds being separated by an aisle which was barely enough for 1 person to walk on! There was nearly NO space for putting luggage! Not to mention that there were no lockers anywhere in the building! I was lucky though as I was the first one occupying the room and the super precious ground space.
There was a car repairing shop right next to the building outside my window and I was woken up by the noise at 6a.m. during weekdays. O man! That's my holiday. Besides, the bunk beds were not of very firm steel and created noise whenever someone moved his bodies. Since the room was so small, if there's someone snoring at night, the others definitely suffer AND I was one of the lucky others when a man snored with echo at one night.... The kitchen was pretty messy as there's just one girl who's on working holiday doing the cleaning for the whole building - ah... forgot to mention about the GREAT no. of dormrooms on floor 2! People who used the kitchen seemed not very well self-disciplined and didn't do the cleaning themselves (felt sorry for that girl). There's just 3 shared showers (for girls) on Fl 2. Luckily I like taking shower at night and didn't need to queue for long. For AUD25 per night, I definitely regretted staying there. - not friendly counter staff when checked in (they didn't tell me about the common facilities at all) - super not friendly counter staff when checked out (I was holding some bedsheets/pillow cases and was wondering where to put them, my hands were full and a staff member was just in front of me, he didn't offer help but asked me to open a big bag with my already full hands and placed the sheets there! What a gentleman!) - not helpful counter staff (they were not sure about some travel info) - super tiny room (at least for Room 20) - very untidy/unclean kitchen - ants in showers/toilets - noisy outside in the morning - cost too much for the above quality Leave a Comment Theme: HostelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than average

 | | | | Zero Davey Boutique Apartment Hotel: Zero Davey, Ups and downs! Compare Rates NEW! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
Upon arriving at Zero Davey I was very impressed with the superficial appearance of the place. Unfortunately, a lot of the things that impressed were indeed very superficial. The first indicator that things were about to go wrong was when I went to put some music on. They may have plasma screens in every room, but they don't have simpler things like CD players, or a DVD player to go with the plasma screen. After then battling with the controls for the heater, and discovering in the very unhelpful instructions that it would take half an hour to heat up, I thought that a hot shower would warm me up instead. I turned on one of the shower heads (there are two) and discovered that the incredibly ineffective and rather broken shower head sends a whole lot of water out the door of the shower (probably because it doesn't actually have a door) and out onto the bathroom floor. The second shower head was an improvement, but the bathroom got very wet, and the water drained out the bathroom door and into the kitchen area. Slightly dangerous. I would not have worried so much if I hadn't just discovered that the room isn't serviced on Sundays. You would think that they would have mentioned this when we had booked weeks in advance! But no. Apparently there is a notice on the check in card, but don't they think that perhaps that's a bit late? After my shower, I went out onto the balcony to discover cigarette butts and a crushed pre-mixed can of liquor on the ground so rather than sit out in the trash I went back to climb into bed (which I admit was very comfortable, although the pillows were huge, to the point that both my boyfriend and I had sore necks the next day) and went to turn on the bedside light, only to discover that it was blown. There were a few other small problems, but I think you get the idea! What a place. If after all this you do decide to stay there (it is visually very lovely) make sure you check your booking confirmation because they originally confirmed me for the wrong dates. That could have gotten messy!
The waterfront suites have fantastic views, the location is fantastic, right on the water. The suites are visually very pleasing, and the staff are really wonderfully friendly. There is very limited secure car parking, but if you don't get one of the approximately 10-12 spaces available then you're on your own. The bed was also lovely and comfortable.
