Travel Tips for Hobart

Join Generation Y in the Park

by ATXtraveler

I noticed that there was a very large contingency of youth, ages ranging from 15-25 hanging out in the main park in downtown Hobart. It seemed to me like it was a normal time for school children to be at school still, so this may have been a ditch day!

It seemed like this looked very similar to a college square, but UTAS was several blocks away!

If anyone knows more on why so many youth hangs out in the park in Hobart, let me know!

I went by plane from Adelaide...

by j-san

I went by plane from Adelaide to Hobart as I had heard warnings about the rough waters were I to go by the ferry. On the other hand, one of my old co-workers just got back via the ferry and he had no problems. Pic thanks to John!
In Hobart there is no subway, just buses. The Tasman bridge from the East side to the West side of Hobart is scary! One of the lanes changes direction several times a day!!! Aaarggh! But as a tourist, unless you really wanna see a summer cricket match (I DID! Really got into cricket in the summer months.. and I stood just one meter from Shane Warne!! ;) ) there is no need for you to cross the river.

PORT ARTHUR is a nationally...

by rozehill

PORT ARTHUR is a nationally recognised symbol of Australia's convict past. For many years it was one of British Empire's major penal settlements, and a notable industrial centre in the young colony of Van Diemen's Land.
Port Arthur was the centre of a complex of penal stations on the Tasman Peninsula. However, much more lies beyond these stark facts.
Port Arthur today is an evocative and exciting place. It features over thirty ruins, restored and period furnished houses set amongst forty hectares of beautiful grounds and gardens.
The structures and landscape of the Port Arthur Historic Site both natural and man made, are a powerful reminder of our early heritage

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

by bijo69

The Tasmanian Museum is a great place to visit on a rainy day. It's hosted in Hobart's oldest building, the Commissariat Store from 1808.
It features some interesting exhibits on the indigenous people and the convict history of Tasmania.
You can also watch a video of the last Thylacinus Cynocephalus, the Tasmanian Tiger, who died in the Hobart Zoo in the 1930s.
The Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.

Visit Port Arthur (Night) for the Ghost Tours!

by xuessium

Came back to Port Arthur a second time for the Ghost tours via Bruny Island Ventures.

It turned out me & my mate were the only folks who signed up for the tour. (Adult A$65, circa 2004) The driver took us to some view points along the Tasman Peninsula before we actually reached Port Arthur just after sunset and we set down to dinner with our driver/guide.

We were then transferred to the local guide and after sorting out volunteers for lamp bearers (which my mate was one) we began our journey through the grounds, visiting all the places/buildings/sites claimed to exhibit paranormal activities. The guide revelled us the stories of encounters that staff and visitors had claimed to come in contact with the nether world in a light-hearted fashion manner, though that had not stopped one of the lady in my group from being totally spooked out and she had to be escorted back to the centre, totally frightened.

The tour was very entertaining and I was glad I did it. However, that did not stopped me from having an "encounter" of my own. While listening to the stories of the guide at the old morgue, I could have sworn I heard faint moanings coming from what used to be the 2nd storey wards (now totally burnt away) above. I looked up and only see a sea of stars above my head. Was it real? Was I imagining it? My mate who was beside me, heard nothing.

Each of us received a certificate at the end of it, certifying that you had completed the Ghost Tour with bravery & courage. Rather interesting momento!

Bruny Island Ventures departs Hobart 6pm and return 11.30pm (approx) for this tour.
Every Tue, Thu & Sat all year round.
