Hi, I've been in Hobart few months ago and I've been in a really nice hostel - ALLPORTS HOSTEL - located just a bit far from the city centre (10minutes walking), clean and cheap.
I used a lot of times to book my hostels all over the world.
You can read something about the hostel here:

I just looked up on the travellerspoint web site under budget accommodation for those dates and found a place for 22 dollars, might be something to look at.

Travel Tips for Hobart

Get the fresh produce there....

by sheryl_tan

Get the fresh produce there. They are really fresh and cheap. In Singapore, the carrots that we usually get from the market are pretty big as compared to the ones on sale in the Salamanca market. So we bought a bunch of the cute little carrots and they were really crunchy and sweet! We also bought a big bag of fresh red apples which we could hardly finish.

The Derwent Bridge

by seamandrew

Not much exciting about the Derwent bridge. Structurally, it's not very impressive, but the view going across the Derwent River is excellent. Also, if you drive across, you have to pay attention to which lanes go which way. That is to say, the bridge has 5 lanes and depending on the time of the day, the middle lane switches from Hobart inbound to Hobart outbound and back. You'll have to cross it on your way from Hobart to the Airport or vice-versa.

Well according to fellow VT'er ScottForster, in 1973 at about 3am a large barge, the
Illawarra, ran into a pylon and two sections of the bridge descended into the river. Several cars plunged into the river after the sections had collapsed. There is a classic picture of a car poised with it's front wheels hanging over
the edge of the bridge. Instantly Hobart was a divided city and commuters had to travel by boat across the river while it took three years to repair the bridge. So as unimpressive as the Derwent may seem, it has a somewhat dark blemish in its history.

The Harbor by Night

by seamandrew

Any stay in Hobart can only benefit from a stroll along the harbor around dusk. The change from light to dark seems to have a special effect on the town of Hobart and the harbor itself. Many restaurtants dot the piers along the harbor so be sure to settle down at a nice once and look for the moon with your loved one. You'll be surprise how quickly you forget about the chilly weather.

Take a Walk in Franklin Park

by ATXtraveler

Sir John Franklin was the first governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). He was also a famed explorer of present day Alaska, the Arctic, and elsewhere around the world. He was named a knight by the British Empire after his work exploring the Northwest Passage.

Now his likeness is the centerpiece for a downtown Square, which is the home to some great picnics and parties.

It also appears to be a major spot for the Metro Tas buses to drop and pick up passengers.

The May Queen

by seamandrew

The May Queen is Australia's oldest sail trading vessel still afloat, and one of only four wooden vessels of her era still afloat around the world.

Built in 1867 on the banks of the Huon River at Franklin, south of Hobart, this beautiful ketch carried timber and supplies around south-east Tasmania for 106 years.

In her spare time, the May Queen raced with great success at logal regattas. She won her first Royal Hobart Regatta trading ketch race in 1868, and was still in the field on the last occasion the race ws run in 1854.

At the end of her working life, the May Queen was given to the Tasmanian Government to be preserved as a reminder of the state's maritime history. She is now in the hands of a voluntary organization set up for her conservation and preservation.
