Bellerive Youth Hostel
by clank007
Hi,
I am planning a remeniscing type trip to Australia and part of that is to return to the stunning town of Hobart in Tasmania.
16 years ago I stayed at the Bellerive YHA on King Street in Bellerive and made very good friends there with the 80 year old manager - Bill Tomlinson.
He was an ex pat who emmigrated to Australia for £10 in the fifties.
I realise he is likely to have passed away now, but does anyone know if the Youth Hostel is still there as I cant find it online?
Simon.

You can contact YHA which is on the net and they would be able to advise--they would have a list of YHA's throughout Australia--Bellerive is a very nice area in Tasmania and Hobart is still a very laid back city.
Anyway try www.yha.com.
Good luck

Travel Tips for Hobart
Hobart International Airport
by xuessium
A small airport with a few counters on each end with a common boarding gate and 2 cafes squashed in the middle. The airport is packed to the brim whenever there are several flights departing or arriving minutes apart. For a state capitol airport, Hobart International Airport looked pretty understated with its outdated architecture style and grim interior. The good thing is that it takes only 15 minutes via coach to reach the airport from Hobart. With the signing of open air treaties, it is expected that real International flights will descend into Hobart in months to come - and hopefully the largely vacant (and locked up) International terminal would be able to support adequately. (circa 2004)
Hobart International Airport serves domestic services for Qantas, Virgin Blue, JetStar and Tasair, as well as Singapore Airlines international charter flights. Website: Hobart's International Airport
Freycinet National Park
by seamandrew
While it takes a good 3-4 hours to get there from Hobart, the destination is well worth the journey. Freycinet National Park is one of the worlds most precious gems, and certainly one of Tasmania's most beautiful parts. Within Freycinet N. P., there are many trails for hiking, there is a camp ground and there are beautiful beaches and lovely mountains that make it an ideal place to enjoy nature. Please see my page on Freycinet N. P. I have provided the link for you.

Fish Punts
by Kate-Me about (various, at the docks)
We arrived in Hobart in bright sunshine and ate lunch at Constitution dock, buying fish and chips from one of the several small floating seafood takeaway boats (punts) moored there.
Eating Fish & Chips at the docks from these is like an institution in Hobart. (You can also buy fresh fish here)
Even businessmen were buying takeaway fish & chips and sitting on benches beside the water front, just like we tourists were.
It was a nice place to sit and look at all the boats and yachts moored there and watch the people go by. With interest we watched a fancy speed boat pull up beside one of the punts, order lunch, and a few minutes later load it on board and speed off again.
That would be the life! Fish & Chips, of course.
We had a nice ice cream at the large Mures seafood restaurant right beside the docks (they also have great tasting inexpensive short black coffee, reports my husband)
Port Arthur
by imstress
Port Arthur is a historic site which was built by convict labour.
The beautiful architecture, gardens and chilling prison facilities survive today for you to explore.
Pls do not ask the staff about the incident that happend in 1996. Read all about it from website.

by balhannah
"Incat" is a world famous builder of Catamarans. They build Catamarans for all over the world. This cruise just takes you to their factory to see how they are built. Cost 2008, $20, with the "Cruise Company." They have built all the Catamarans in the photos, plus a lot more.
