Gingerbread Cottages: Gingerbread Bakehouse.

by tropicrd

We stayed in the old bakehouse which accomodates up to six people but we were a couple and had lots of room.
It was fully furnished with period pieces and had everything we needed, including a washing machine and dryer.
Our hosts were very generous with the breakfast basket with homemade fresh bread, cake and biscuits.Free range eggs and bacon....
The beds were comfy and everything spotlessly clean.
It was so nice to arrive after a days sightseeing and light the log belly stove and relax in the big arm chairs after a spa bath.
Westbury is a pretty little village which was established in the 1820's as a garrison town.
The five cottages date from 1850 and are heritage listed.
It is close to the White house museum,Westbury maze and Pearn's famous steam world.
I would recommend anyone to stay in these lovely cottages, they are really delightful and away from the main stream of traffic yet so close to everything. You do need to have your own transport to get around though. It is approx 20 minute drive from Launceston along the Bass Highway or 40 minute drive from Devonport ferry terminal (Spirit of Tasmania).

The cottages are really lovely and off the main stream of traffic. The peaceful ambience of a heritage village is great.
The homely atmosphere of the well kept cottages and the beautiful furniture period pieces and memorabillia was a delight.
The pot belly stove and the spa were a treat after a day of sightseeing.
The breakfast basket was one of the best we have had with the freshest produce.
If you get a chance have a look at the other cottages...they are really unique.

Anchlia Waterfront Cottage.: Bicheno for Penguins

by tropicrd

We stayed in the Penguin Nook and found it very private and charming.
It is out of the main township and off the main road but worth it for the privacy.
There is a two story cottage next door but it is separated by a fence and garden.
It is nicely decorated and spotlessly clean with all facilities.
We had a very pleasant 7 days and could not have asked for anything better.
I have been told this property is for sale so hope the new owners will keep it as good as the current ownwers.

The cottage is really a delightful place to stay for awhile.
Having the wide windows letting in the light while we ate our breakfast watching and listening to the birds among the native trees in the garden was a treat.
The bed was very comfortable and the views to Waub's bay delightful.
You can hear the little penguins in the garden after nightfall and just a short stroll down to the rocks to see them come out of the water onto the beach and up to the rookeries at the last light of the day.
We could not have been more pleased with the facilities, even torches and umbrellas were provided for.
I would recommend this for anyone who wants privacy.

Queechy Cottages: Great views of George's Bay

by tropicrd

Queechy Cottages are only a walk down the hill to St Helens. We stayed in a self contained cottage with a great view across George's Bay.
We liked it because it was private even though it is more known as a motel.
It was well appointed without the fuss--simplistic decor but clean and comfortable.
Rabbits love to hop around the veranda--probably looking for something to eat.
The electric blanket came in very handy,it can get very cold in Tasmania.

We liked the privacy that was offered, the full kitchen was amply stocked with plenty of crockery, cutlery and kitchen wares.
We enjoyed the small cottage feel and the veranda where we could enjoy a drink and look at the beautiful view.
There is a lot of accomodation in St Helen's but we would come back here again because it basically has everything,it is affordable and close to Binalong Bay and Bay of Fires.

Tamanian Gem in the wild west

by tropicrd

I loved the ambience of this place, the flowering vine on the veranda was so pretty.
The bed was comfy and the bathroom was big--but cold, would have been better with a heating device.
It was an historic cottage experience close to all that Strahan and the west had to offer.
A great gateway to the Gordon river.

Very clean and spacious accomodation within a stroll to the village and the wharf.

Cradle Mountain Inn: Brrr!

by Bogmom

I arrived in mid-May at about 8 pm to a room which did not have the heat turned on. The only heat was supplied by a gas fireplace. The temperature inside the room was a very chilly 45F. I was assured if I went to supper and returned the room would be warm. It didn't warm up to 68 F until about 7 the next morning.

The room was generally clean, although a throw over a chair looked somewhat doubtful.

The restaurant in the hotel serves only an expensive several-course meal - much more than I eat. Tip: if you are a light eater, go to the bar. They'll sell you a much smaller and much more reasonably priced salad.

Also, there is no WiFi, although (very slow) WiFi is available for a fee at the convenience store at the park headquarters.

The park bus stops across the street and is a convenient way to reach the park. You can drive, too, but have to watch out for the Aussie "speed bumps," places where the road is purposefully narrowed to one lane to slow traffic. Also, from the hotel you can walk to the park on a trail, which is flat and pleasant.

Overall - not a terrible place to stay, but not worth the price, either.

great views of the lake

Tamar River Retreat: Personable, lovely, and .....ah....paradise

by Gypsy_Saskia

A B&B right by the Tamar River, consisting of two cottages. Cherry Cottage was everything we hoped for and more. The owners are the loveliest people. Breakfast included home made jam, bread and joghurt and freshly picked plums. A real gem.

good location, with light cooking utilities. 5 mins walk to Salamanca Place and markets/battery point. very near to restaurant. room area quite alright. however, limited parking space. have to pre-book the parking area, or have to park outside the hotel at 1hrly rate.

good location

Freycinet Lodge: ACCOMODATION AT THE ENDS OF THE EARTH

by holiday_princess

OVERALL
Being a tropical island/sun lover myself personally, Tasmania was not exactly the perfect destination for me; and I knew this before embarking on my journey there. Having said that, the landscape was still incredibly beautiful in its own unique way; and any change of scenery is always a good one, no matter how bad it seems at the time.

The objectives of my holiday were to relax and embrace nature and its surroundings, and I achieved all of the above. Being used to the brightness of summer on my usual vacations, I did find the climate and the dark coloured scenery depressing though, and I must say that I don't think I have ever been so glad to be home from a holiday in my life.

GOOD~

We paid just over $250 per night to stay in a deluxe Wine Glass Cabin which possessed all of the usual features of a 4 star hotel, including a deep spa bath with a window overlooking the wildlife and nature outside, as well as a beautiful complimentary buffet breakfast each morning. The absence of TV or telephones made the experience extra interesting and unique, proving a real sense of reconnecting with nature and family, and the things that matter.

The view from the restaurant and bar area of the lodge is spectacular, overlooking the magnificent and sparkling Oyster Bay from every angle. The sunsets and sunrises are breathtaking too.

NOT SO GOOD~

-Although the staff were friendly and helpful when asked questions, I would not say that the service was anything out of the ordinary considering the price, and they did not exactly make you feel overly welcome or warm. (Or am I just being biased, comparing every staff to that of the service at the Shangri-La???)

-Without a car, you cannot do much at all. We had planned to do the 3hr hike to Wine Glass Bay, but when reception told us that to get to the carpark where the trail begins we would need to walk for 2.5km since we didn't have transport, we decided not to go after all.

-The restaurant and bistro contained within the lodge are the only places to buy food from, so if you do not wish to spend $25 per person per meal during your stay, I strongly recommend you stock up on groceries before you go. (Having said that, there are no kitchen facilities or microwaves in the rooms, so you would not be able to make your own dinners anyway)

*Having no television or phones in the cabins is an ideal concept, truly promoting peace and tranquility.

*Each cabin is separate from the other, providing a sense of privacy and oneness with yourself and nature

*Natural wildlife surrounding you such as the seemingly well-fed possum who came to our balcony door each night in search of food and attention, was a rare experience for us!
