Travel Tips for Launceston
DEVIL'S GULLET
by balhannah
Devils Gullet Track is a short 20 minute climb and is regarded as one of the best places to view of Tasmania’s highest mountain, Mt. Ossa at 1640m, Barn Bluff 1559m, Cradle Mt. 1545m and Mt. Pelion East 1461m.
There is a car park at the lookout with a track to the cliff face. An easy walk, and we were at the viewing platform that overhangs the 200 metre high sheer cliff. The cliffs channel south westerly winds up into the gullet. Quite impressive and can be quite windy!
Devils Gullet is reached via C38 west of Mole Creek and then the Lake Mackenzie Road.
The road to Devil's Gullet and on to Lake McKenzie is gravel but quite good.
Launceston Cataract Gorge
by imstress
Cataract Gorge Reserve is located in the northern city of Launceston and it is walkable from the city centre.
One of the enterance is from northern side of Kings Bridge to the Cliff Grounds via the "Cataract Walk".
If you are more adventerous and energetic or lost your way just like us, you could take the Zig Zag Track which begins at the Southern side of Kings Bridge. This follows the top cliff and leads on the First Basin and the Suspension Bridge.
Launceston, Tasmania
by kooka3
When I visited Tasmania, I flew into Launceston instead of Hobart. Must have been a cheaper flight! :)
It's a really pretty city. I got there late in the afternoon, so I only really had time to walk to Cataract Gorge during daylight that day, so that was a nice introduction to the city! There's plenty of places to explore and discover in the city, although it's often overlooked in favor of Hobart, Port Arthur, or Cradle Mountain. Take a day or 2 to discover Launceston! There is a lot of history here, since it is Australia's 3rd oldest city. Something that most people don't know is that the city of Melbourne was planned by John Batman when he was living in Launceston.
The city has a population of just under 100,000 people, making it second in size to Hobart. It's on the Tamar River where the North and South Esk Rivers converge
